Over the last several years, libraries have experienced a myriad of changes that have affected the marketplace and changed the way they purchase electronic resources. With the move from print to electronic, the variety of options available to purchase library materials has increased. Acquisitions in libraries have further been complicated by decreasing budgets, fewer staff, new technology, and user behavior. The essence of public land stewardship lies far beyond the words, numbers, and pictures compiled in this project compendium. During the past seven years, many people have gained greater appreciation of the discovered and yetto‐ be discovered treasures held within the Southern Nevada public lands. People have had the opportunity to learn about and make a first‐time connection with nature and the community within which they live. Some participants realized dynamic and everlasting changes in their lives as a result of their new experiences and insights.

Grounded in the inspiration and vision of Challenger astronaut Dr. Ronald E. McNair, this program began at The Center in 1999. The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Institute at UNLV is committed to diversify-ing the ranks of American faculty and research institutions by encour-aging and preparing undergraduate students who are members of un-der-represented groups to purse doctoral studies. The McNair program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral study and to pursue careers in college teaching. McNair participants are stu-dents from low-income, first-generation backgrounds, and/or members of underrepresented groups in graduate education.

- UNLV provides stewardship of Walking Box Ranch (WBR) by providing a caretaker who oversees the property, facilitating use of the property by researchers and educators, developing a use and research policy for the property, and coordinating these activities with BLM and in accordance with TNC restrictions.
- UNLV currently addresses security issues for the property through the presence of the caretaker and two Metro Officers who reside on the property in two recreational vehicles.

- An RV has been purchased for the SNAP Mobile Exhibit and is in process of being retrofitted.

The Hector’s Helpers program was in full action this quarter. Students at Roy Martin Middle School completed their environmental stewardship project. Our team produced and distributed promotional flyers in order to increase Clark County School participation in Hector’s Helpers. In addition this quarter, the Hector’s Helpers team was showcased in a news segment aired by Las Vegas City Scene.

Part of every UNLV engineering student’s academic experience, the senior design project stimulates engineering innovation and entrepreneurship. Each student in their senior year chooses, plans, designs, and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. A capstone to the student’s educational career, the senior design project encourages the student to use everything learned in the engineering program to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge. Those that do well in school have greater opportunities for post-secondary education, and later have better prospects for employment. One of the major factors that can affect a child’s academic achievement is his or her health status. Academic outcomes and health conditions are consistently linked in the literature (Taras & Potts-Datema, 2005). Children with poor health status, and especially those with common chronic health conditions, have increased numbers of school absences and more academic deficiencies (Taras & Potts-Datema, 2005). As the United States dramatically expands wind energy deployment, the industry is challenged with developing a skilled workforce and addressing public resistance. Wind Powering America’s Wind for Schools project addresses these issues by:
• Developing Wind Application Centers (WACs) at universities; WAC students assist in implementing school wind turbines and participate in wind courses
• Installing small wind turbines at community “host” schools
• Implementing teacher training with interactive curricula at each host school.

- Presentations were given about the Nevada Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights to senior staff at Clark County Parks and Recreation and to the Southern Nevada Regional Open Space and Trails working group.
- A total of 12 people completed all requirements and successfully graduated from the Nevada State Certification in Environmental Education and Interpretation program.
- Forever Earth was scheduled for 29 days and served 975 people.

The Hector’s Helpers program provides an opportunity to bring environmental education and foster a sense of stewardship to students. We supply a once a week hands-on curriculum which includes a litter clean-up fieldtrip. Students learn general environmental concepts such as community, conservation, recycling, and litter prevention. They will also have access to Geographic Information Systems and Podcast technology. Through the use of GIS and Podcasts we hope to get community members to collect data and prevent litter and desert dumping.
