The Effects Of Multimedia-Supported Problem-Based Inquiry On Student Engagement, Empathy, And Assumptions About History, Thomas Brush, John Saye

This research extends a continuing line of inquiry investigating how multimedia resources might be joined with other support structures to effectively implement problem-based inquiry (PBI) activities in secondary history classrooms. Two history teachers with experience in PBI implemented a technology-supported problem-based civil rights unit in their classrooms. Analysis of data obtained from classroom observations, observations of student presentations, and student and teacher interviews suggests that the multimedia problem-based unit provided an authentic context for encountering historical content, provoked empathetic views of historical dilemmas, and encouraged meaningful encounters with historical issues that promoted engagement and more advanced epistemological beliefs about history. …

In this paper, the authors present a study aimed at developing and evaluating a self-learning Computer Instruction Package CIP with multimedia. The evaluation focused on the quality of the multimedia, learning effectiveness as well as on students‘ satisfaction. The CIP was designed for the teaching of musical instruments to students in grades 4 and 5 in Thailand. The sample group consisted of 40 students randomly selected from grades 4 and 5 at a public school in Bangkok, Thailand. Formal features of video such as shot composition and graphic design can weigh heavily on the success or failure of educational videos. The purpose of this study is to determine if the Sharpening Math Skills Lab technology-mediated mathematics instructional practices for math-delayed middle school students have positive effects on their mathematics achievement and spatial visualization ability and to gauge student engagement in learning, implementation of the principles of instructional design, and attitudes toward mathematics instruction. The results of a recent meta-analysis report a range of significantly positive to significantly negative effect sizes which establish a need for further evaluation of academic achievement utilizing technology-mediated mathematics programs at the middle school level (Slavin, Lake, & Groff, 2007).
