This study analyzed patient education materials provided to poor and underserved patients treated by safety-net providers. A content analysis was conducted to evaluate the materials’ formatting and written style, readability, pictorial content, source, and cultural appropriateness.

This study examined the types of learning experiences leading to the development of expertise. A qualitative research approach was employed with twelve participants from a purposeful sampling of four historically themed museums. Analysis revealed learning experiences leading to expertise development included formal training and continuing education and informal and incidental learning.

In Canada, current federal learning-and-work policy is focused on individual learner-worker development using an iteration of lifelong learning as cyclical. Increasing numbers of disenfranchised young adults are resisting participation in such learning. In this regard, I consider the predicament of young adults in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. To help us think about adequately addressing the dislocation they experience in life and work, I offer a Freire-informed vision of a critical social pedagogy of learning and work.

In this paper, I begin with an outline of modern citizenship and a review of feminist and other critical analyses of this concept. I then discuss the role of consumption as a marker of citizenship. The paper closes with the prospect of understanding shopping as a potential process of learning about the links between consumption, citizenship and globalization.

Leaders defined spirituality as different from, but related to religion, part of their identity, and as a connection to a Higher Being, to others, and to nature. Spirituality provided a calling to profession, instilled an ethical framework and served as a resource in times of challenge. It influenced use of power, decision making, and communication with coworkers. Participants exhibited a variety of leadership styles reflecting individual perceptions of spirituality.

This paper explored peer teaching experiences of older adult volunteer instructors at a Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI). Data was collected through in-depth interviews with the instructors, observations of classes, and documents of the LLI. Analysis revealed various aspects of peer teaching of adults: participants enjoy teaching, they describe their role as facilitator of learning, interaction in class results in reciprocity, and participants voluntarily continue to develop courses and teaching materials.

This qualitative study explored Black women's activism and their process of learning and constructing knowledge in the environmental justice movement. By conducting in-depth interviews with sixteen activists from three southeastern states, findings revealed that a passion for home/place energized Black women's activism and served as the epicenter for knowledge construction.

This study sought to create profiles of adult literacy and basic education (ALBE) instructors and use of the Internet in their classrooms. This paper unearths Septima P. Clark’s contributions to adult education efforts at Highlander Folk School. Autobiographical texts and archival holdings were analyzed through a critical, feminist lens to determine her contributions. In addition, the adult education strategies she utilized in her work were examined using a Freireian framework.

This quantitative study looks at the intersection between two epistemological theories: (1) the Women’s Ways of Knowing Model and (2) Perry’s Scheme of Intellectual Development. Findings confirm the existence of ways of knowing structures and show that the theories largely address different meaning making constructs. Some demographic differences were found.

This paper addresses the question: What are the contextual factors that shape learners’ engagement in adult literacy education? Six adult literacy classes were studied at an urban adult learning center. Data sources included video, traditional ethnographic observation, stimulated recall interviews and open interviews. Findings focus on the ways that teachers’ roles shape engagement.
