Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: An Emerging And Effective Model For Developing Home-School Partnerships, Lee Wilkinson

Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC) is discussed as an emerging and effective model of home-school collaboration and shared problem solving. A case study is presented to demonstrate how practitioners can use CBC to deliver high quality consultation and intervention services to students, teachers, and parents in a real world setting. An evidence-based intervention (EBI) was implemented in the context of CBC to enhance the on-task and compliant behavior of a student referred for consultation. Results indicated a significant increase in teacher ratings of behavioral control (on-task and compliant behavior) following consultation. Values are the basis for defining what aspects of the evaluand should be considered meritous in a particular context. They are something which is in principle or quality intrinsically valuable or desirable. So in evaluation, factual premises describe performance, while value premises can be thought of as the qualities that, when converted to standards, determine the degree to which the performance was good or bad, worthwhile or worthless, and significant or insignificant. Value premises can be validated using commonsense or based on such things as the severity of needs, resource efficiency, legal requirements, professional requirements, and so on. There are …

Abstract -- In October, 2006 the Qatar Foundation in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University began a Pilot project to digitize the Qatar Heritage Book Collection and make the collection available to the world. The Pilot project will make available online 300 rare materials and 5000 books from the general collection from the Heritage Library by May, 2007. This paper will describe how the project will address the practical problems surrounding intellectual control of the collection, digitization workflow, OCR and management of the Arabic character set, and the configuration of the information management system for world-wide access to the digital library.

The reason for this conclusion is that modern education is largely knowledge based and asks the learner to learn ideas that have nothing in common with the reality of the learner. Community colleges are often criticized for the low numbers of students who ostensibly appear successful. This article takes a unique look a the pathways many community college students take and redefines success as transition. Using the full population of the Los Angeles Community College District, this article examines the intra-institutional transitions of 1) remedial to college level, 2) English as a second language to traditional college courses, and 3) lower to higher academic goals. This article presents findings about the implementation of a system for rapidly assessing student progress in math and reading in grades K–12—a system that potentially could reduce pressure on teachers resulting from high-stakes testing and the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act. Interviews with 49 teachers and administrators in one Texas school district suggest that the assessments allowed teachers to individualize and target instruction; provide more tutoring; reduce drill and practice; and improve student readiness for, and spend more time on, critical thinking activities, resulting in a more balanced curriculum. Fraternity men (N = 261) at a small to midsized public university saw one of two versions of a rape prevention program or were in a control group. Program participants reported significant increases in empathy toward rape survivors and significant declines in rape myth acceptance, likelihood of raping, and likelihood of committing sexual assault. Program participants’ scores significantly differed from an untreated control group in several areas. Implications for describing a male-on-male rape to increase men’s empathy toward female survivors and other related attitudes are discussed.

This paper outlines new approaches and motivations about supervisory HMI, such as mobility and information access by different human actors belonging to the organization, by using diverse interaction devices, exploiting Web Services and their underlying technologies. The basic concepts are explained in the context of industrial supervision adopting a service oriented architecture (SOA) design approach which makes it possible to integrate real time information from different systems more easily than traditional ones. A representative supervisory scenario which illustrates the approach is described and discussed.

Examining Productive Conceptions Of Masculinities: Lessons Learned From Academically Driven African American Male Student-Athletes, Brandon E. Martin, Frank Harris

Conceptions of masculinities among African American male student athletes are considered in this article. Grounded in the social constructivist perspective and guided by the phenomenological qualitative research tradition, individual interviews were conducted with 27 academically driven African American male student- athletes attending four Division I universities. Findings suggest that the participants embrace a wide range of productive gender-related attitudes and behaviors that are uncommon among male college student-athletes. Implications and recommendations are offered for coaches and university administrators charged with working with African American male student-athletes.

This paper considers the challenges ahead after having assessed what determined the outcome of the referendum in April 2004 and the balance of forces as they emerge in the Parliamentary elections of 2006. This study investigated cultural learning by 194 high school students in summer study abroad programs. Quantitative analysis was used to determine if significant changes occurred in self reports of cultural, linguistic, and interpersonal challenges in the target culture; understanding of target-culture perspectives, practices, and products; and identification with native versus target culture after study abroad. Outcomes in each area were compared between homestay and non-homestay participants. This chapter was published in "Identity and Second Language Learning: Culture, Inquiry, and Dialogic Activity in Educational Contexts."

Research findings from several academic domains have demonstrated that students’ judgments of their own academic capabilities, or self-efficacy beliefs, influence their academic behaviors and performances. Absent from this body of research are studies assessing self-efficacy beliefs and their relation to foreign language proficiency. Informed by the tenets of Bandura’s (1986) social cognitive theory, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-efficacy, anxiety, and French proficiency in reading and listening. Students’ reading self-efficacy in French was positively related to reading proficiency, whereas reading anxiety was not related. Listening self-efficacy was positively associated with listening proficiency only for …

More than 160 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide an clear and understandable, international foundation fr the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resources Development. Six themes have emerged that provide a foundation for the linkage: The evolution of the term: historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understanding; popularizing of the American concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition.
