La Guerre Et Le Génocide De 1994: Impacts Et Nouveaux Espoirs Sur L'Éducation Des Jeunes Filles Au Rwanda, Donatille Mujawamariya, Susan Judith Ship

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Qualitative methodology and a grounded theory perspective were used to develop themes and patterns from their stories. An inclusive, multidimensional framework, including institutional, structural, situational, dispositional, informational, and self-determination factors for thinking about their participation and integration into society and the knowledge economy related to employment and education has emerged from this study ...

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Since the endorsement of a socialist market economy in 1992 in the 14th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, self-financing and fee-charging principles have been widely adopted, and finally legitimized in China's higher education system. However, refonns in China's post secondary education, mainly privatization and tuition fee hikes, have produced some serious controversies and concerns among students, parents, and international education researchers. This article delves into the issues of post secondary education refonn in China and brings into attention problems that occur when policies are institutionalized in a centralized decentralization setting.

Decolonizing Indigenons Education: Beyond Culturalism: Toward Post-Cultural Strategies, Yatta Kanu

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

As a response to the recent international calls to decolonize the education of Indigenous students and increase school success among them by including indigenous knowledge into school curricula, aspects of Aboriginall cultural knowledge/perspectives were integrated into the Social Studies curriculum in a Canadian inner city school in order to appraise the effect on academic achievement, class attendance and school retention among some Canadian Aboriginal students. Results suggest some optimism about increasing school success among these students by integrating Aboriginal perspectives. Five effective approaches to the integration of Indigenous perspectives into the school curriculum and some critical elements of instruction ...

Aprender Sin Educación: El Aprendizaje, La Historia Personal Y El Contexto Comunitario En La Experiencia De La Universidad De La Tierra, Leah Oster-Katz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“Minimizing Risks In Study Abroad Programs: Who Is Responsible?”, Marc Prou

Marc E. Prou

This presentation focuses on the possibilities of minimizing potential risks involved in education abroad programs in the Caribbean. Dealing with the existing literature, the procedures of past and existing programs, and the testimonies and experiences of former students and administrators, we aim to achieve a better understanding of the relationships between responsibilities, accountability, and the possibility of minimizing foreseeable risks. From the standpoint of the students, the faculty, and the institution, we will attempt to gauge the possible risks based on their likelihood, preventability, and severity, and will examine ways in which a standardized procedure for allocating responsibility and accountability ...

Discounting The Political: Understanding Civic Participation As Private Practice, Ottilia Chareka, Alan Sears Jun 2005

Discounting The Political: Understanding Civic Participation As Private Practice, Ottilia Chareka, Alan Sears

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Around the world there is concern about the disengagement of citizens from participation in civic life. Emerging from that concern have been calls for new initiatives in civic education and many jurisdictions have developed and implemented new programs in the area. Much of this work has gone forward with little or no research on the prior conceptions of participation that exist among citizens. This paper reports on a study designed to map the conceptions of civic participation held by a group of recent African immigrants to Canada compared with a group of native-born Canadians. The focus here is on findings ...

Citizenship Education In Post Modern Society, Jan Pouwels Jun 2005

Citizenship Education In Post Modern Society, Jan Pouwels

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Dealing with citizenship education as a part of formal education, I argue that the international human rights culture and human rights education can serve as a fundamental reference for contemporary citizenship education and that conflict pedagogy is an adequate teaching strategy. I try to draw a picture of how such education can be perceived from a pedagogical and didactical point of view, making a set of recommendations to actualize this perspective on values and citizenship education.

On The Intersectionality Of Transnationalism And Citizenship, Lori Wilkinson Jun 2005

On The Intersectionality Of Transnationalism And Citizenship, Lori Wilkinson

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Seen positively, transnationalism enriches the cultural, linguistic and religious diversity of many countries and enhances the exchange of goods and services in the increasingly globalized economy. Seen negatively, transnationalism creates disunity in terms of introducing new ethnic, linguistic and religious traditions in developed countries, and poses risks to security and national well being. This paper examines citizenship conceptions, policies and practices directed towards transnational migrants within the European Union, the United States, and Canada.

The Values Debate At The Nexus Of Transnational Perspectives On Human Rights And Citizenship Education, Yvonne Hébert, Glen Eyford, France Jutras

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Serving as introduction to the collection of papers in this issue, this paper takes up seven themes to situate each paper in the debates that characterize the field of citizenship education and to attempt to understand the linkages between values, human rights and citizenship education in a transnational era. The themes explore planetary philosophical perspectives; understand values as practice and human rights as foundational to values; set geopolitical considerations of values in postcolonial perspectives and pedagogical perspectives in transnational contexts; characterize citizenship education as a contested field; and reflect upon the relevance of transnationalism to the values debate. In a ...

Bilingual Education In Western Canada And Chinese Language Minority Students’ Self Perceptions Of Their Citizenship And Ethnicity, Joe Zhou Wu

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Various bilingual education models can either empower or disable minority students according to their goals, structures and human relations (Akkari, 1998). This article presents the findings of a case study on a bilingual program that exists in Western Canada. It examines the structure and contents of the program, and then, based on interviews with a group of Grade 6 bilingual students, discusses their self perceptions of their citizenship, ethnic identity and multicultural thinking.

Citizenship Education For Child Citizens, Brian Howe Jun 2005

Citizenship Education For Child Citizens, Brian Howe

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

One important reason for the inadequacy of current citizenship education is that children – defined here as all young persons under age 18 - are rarely seen and treated as citizens in their own right. To the extent that children are educated about citizenship, they typically learn about their rights and responsibilities as future adult citizens. They rarely learn that they are citizens of the present and they are rarely treated as such. This article reviews the modern meaning of citizenship and shows, in reference to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, that children indeed are citizens of the ...

Citoyenneté Et Valeurs Dans L’Eurafrique, Charles-Romain Mbele Jun 2005

Citoyenneté Et Valeurs Dans L’Eurafrique, Charles-Romain Mbele

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Keeping Teachers Happy: Job Satisfaction Among Primary School Teachers In Rural Northwest China, Tanja Sargent, Emily Hannum May 2005

Keeping Teachers Happy: Job Satisfaction Among Primary School Teachers In Rural Northwest China, Tanja Sargent, Emily Hannum

Gansu Survey of Children and Families Papers

Numerous empirical studies from developing countries have noted that parental education has a robust and positive effect on child learning, a result that is often attributed to more educated parents making greater investments in their children's human capital. However, the nature of any such investment has not been well understood. This study examines how parental education affects various parental investments in goods and time used in children's human capital production via an unusually detailed survey from rural China. It is found that more educated parents make greater educational investments in both goods and time and that these relationships ...

First Experiences With Object Lessons In Nineteenth-Century Brazil: Origins Of A Progressive Pedagogy For The Brazilian Primary School, Karl M. Lorenz, Ariclê Vechia

Education Faculty Publications

This paper describes the methodology of Object Teaching and relates how its appearance in Brazil was a transnational phenomenon that achieved its maximum articulation in 1886 with Rui Barbosa’s translation of Norman Calkins’ Primary Object Lessons. It begins with an overview of primary school teaching in Brazil in the second half of the 19th century, followed by discussion of Barbosa’s ideas on promoting change in the schools. Central to the exposition are the ideas contained in a report that Barbosa submitted to the National Assembly in 1882, in which he proposed a new organization of primary school education ...

“To Be A Doctor” The Hopes And Aspirations Of The Children Attending Namu Elementary School, And The Obstacles That Block Their Paths To Obtaining Them., Lauren Burke

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“Our village, Namu”. The children, some hesitant, others eager, all proud, bring forth pictures they have drawn of their hometown. In the children’s minds and through the crayons provided them, flowers sprout up next to streams, and birds fly in the sky. Almost every drawing includes a home with semicircle interloping plaster tiles for the roof. Fish swim in the rivers and a few suns contain smiley faces. First impressions of visitors to the town or school , may be similar. The pavement street leading from the village to the larger city abruptly stops and turns into dirt road at ...
