This study was conducted by the foreign language instructor of a rural school district in Northwestern Minnesota. The population of the high school (grades nine through twelve) is 144 students. The racial composition of the district is nearly 100% white. The district is classified as "low-income" with 41.3% of the district's children qualifying for free or reduced hot lunch. Of the most recent three classes, an average of 39% of graduates planned to attend a four-year college, 37% planned to attend a two-year college, and 24% planned to enter the work force. Water Quality Assessment: A Hands-On Approach To Environmental Education, Tracy Lynn Royse

A water quality assessment lab manual has been created to assist secondary educators using the HACH water quality testing kits. It consists of ten chemical tests, a geological survey and a biological assessment largely based upon Washington State University's lab format and the Walla Walla County Conservation District's water study protocol. The lab manual also contains safety guidelines, a scoring rubric and an action plan research project. The project examines the historical context of Contemporary Literary Theories: Deconstruction, Marxist Literary Theory, Althusser's Theory ofldeology, and Feminist Literary Theory, through a review ofliterature. The project culminates in a 4-6 week unit on teaching Feminist Literary Theory, Marxist Literary Theory, and Deconstruction in connection with a unit on Rudolfo Anaya's award-winning novel, Bless Me, Wtima. The unit is designed for 10th grade Honors Language Arts classes.

This project examined preventative and proactive behavior models and strategies that effect positive school climate and minimized misbehavior. The review of current research found that schools were more successful in reducing or eliminating violent behavior when a positive school-wide behavior program was developed with input from staff, students, community and parents and was frequently monitored and assessed over time. A Comparison Of Bullying In Four Rural Middle And High Schools, Jody Isernhagen, Sandra Harris

Bullying in rural school settings is clearly a problem and some of our students are suffering as a result.. Bullying is defined in this study of 819 rural middle and high school students as when a student is exposed repeatedly to negative actions by one or more other students. Students responded to a questionnaire about how often and where bullying occurred and who students told. Analysis of the data reported frequencies, and the Pearson chi-square was used to test for significance (p <.05) for gender and school level. Results indicated that while there are many similarities, there are some differences in bullying at these two levels that should be considered when reducing bullying. First, students should be encouraged to develop positive strategies to react to name calling and teasing particularly at the middle school level. Second, administrators and teachers must communicate better with students that they care about reducing bullying, especially at the high school level.

The purpose of this study was to explore the development of cultural competence in a group of university nursing students in the context of an interactive substance abuse prevention project attached to a health promotion course with 414 racially diverse high school students. The project provided opportunities for contact, interaction, and reflection. A descriptive approach was utilized to elicit the meaning attached to the experience. Data included written content from an exit survey, field notes from onsite debriefings, transcriptions of a focus group interview, and an analysis of theoretical papers. Very broadly the general aims of this study are: to examine whether the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) measures depressive symptomatology equivalently across adolescent boys and girls; and to examine whether schools exert effects on student levels of depressive symptomatology independently of individual level characteristics. In the course of this study quite a number of subsidiary questions are also addressed. Most of these questions centre around the psychometric properties of the CES-D scale when used with adolescent samples.

This collection is an artificially created collection from different donors, consisting primarily of scrapbooks, programs, and other ephemera related to Huntington High School. Ephemera includes a 1920 issue of the Tatler student newspaper, commencement programs, and materials created during various class reunions for the classes of 1921, 1928, 1929, 1937, and 1945. Scrapbooks for the class of 1921 reunions and Myrtle R. Cooke’s “The Girl Graduate’s Scrapbook” include extensive amounts of photographs and printed material related to the reunions and Huntington High School respectively. Cooke’s scrapbook also includes unrelated family materials.

In response to accountability issues mandated by federal and state legislation, educators are looking at various aspects within schools to identify relationships between school variables and student performance. This study addressed this issue by investigating the relationship between organizational citizenship behaviors of middle school teachers and student achievement, and organizational citizenship behaviors of middle school teachers and school climate within 82 middle schools throughout the state of Virginia. This study also explored the relative effects of student socio-economic status (SES) and organizational citizenship behaviors on student achievement. The dearth of statistical or anecdotal evidence aside, combined with the relative lack of reported litigation, it appears that most students and teachers regularly participate in perhaps the most common daily school ritual by joining in the patriotic recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance (Pledge) and the salute to the American Flag. The impact of traditional and alternative teacher preparation programs on student achievement and the instructional delivery methods used in middle school and high school Algebra I classrooms was explored through a mixed method comparative design. The data analysis revealed that alternative teacher preparation programs are a viable avenue to explore in meeting the needs of public schools for providing qualified teachers in mathematics classrooms at the middle school and high school levels. Data from the standardized state test and district level quarterly assessments revealed no significant differences between groups on half of the achievement measures, but there was a significant …
