The purpose of this study was to investigate downsizing from the perspective of the person who was separated from the job, and to explore its connection to violence and peace studies. Findings suggest that experiences varied according to context and point of view and that downsizing was often a violative.

Teaching Beliefs Of Graduate Students In Adult Education: A Longitudinal Perspective, Edward W. Taylor

This longitudinal study explores the influence on teaching beliefs from participating in a masters program in adult education. A group of practicing adult educators was interviewed over a two-year period while participating in graduate study. Findings reveal that graduate school had little impact on their prior teaching beliefs. Implications for graduate schools are discussed.

This paper uses data from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Learning to investigate how discursive and structural dimensions of social capital influence engagement in learning. The primary finding is that social capital influences formal and informal learning in opposite directions.

A desire to promote learning for personal development and change dominates much of research and practice in adult and higher education. Few studies, however, have attempted to describe how participating learners experience developmental programs, or how they make sense of these programs in the their particular life contexts. In this study, we describe the re-making of a “learner” identity, as narrated by underprepared adults enrolled in a developmentally-oriented community college program.

This study explored the ideological messages about welfare recipients promoted in two welfare-to-work programs. It was found that programs are greatly influenced by the unjust stereotypes about welfare recipients upheld in popular rhetoric. It is concluded that critical educators should question these dominant discourses and find ways to promote this questioning in programs.

This paper begins an analysis of the development of professional identity among teachers and coordinators in steel mill learning programs. Teachers and coordinators all have an extreme flexibility in thinking about their own careers and in dealing with the issues that arise in the workplace. They have worked to develop a sense of vision and a philosophy of adult education that allows them to connect with the learners while working at some semblance of professional growth.
