Peru: From Village to Empire traces the development of complex society in Peru from 13,000 BP to 1500 AD. The exhibit focuses on what led groups of people to choose a particular location and settle down, how these settlements developed from villages to towns to cities, and how kin related bands formed states and then empires. The exhibition will feature over thirty-five objects (ceramics, textiles and metalwork) and sixty graphics, including maps, photographs and drawings. The New England Resource Center for Higher Education’s (NERCHE) Civic Engagement Cluster1 is a multi-institutional model for strengthening civic engagement in higher education across ten institutions simultaneously. Reflecting NERCHE’s mission to promote community, collaboration, and change in higher education, the Cluster is based on the premise that significant change can be accomplished most effectively through collaboration and communication across institutions. The purpose of this Brief is to pass on some key lessons learned in the pilot year of this project about laying the groundwork for collaboration and improving institutional practice.

The introduction of vocational education and training (VET) programs into secondary schools is a significant development in Australian education. VET programs are intended to broaden the range of curriculum offerings and provide young people with another pathway to work and tertiary education. A key feature of the secondary VET programs in Australia is that they comply with the National Training Framework and also form part of students' senior secondary certificate. Tertiary Entrance Performance : The Role Of Student Background And School Factors, Gary Marks, Julie Mcmillan, Kylie Hillman

This report examines the tertiary entrance performance of students in Year 12 in 1998 using data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project to address a variety of issues relating to tertiary entrance performance. The first part of the report examines the relationship between tertiary entrance performance and a variety of demographic, socioeconomic, educational and psychological factors. The second part focuses on individual schools, examining the impact of schools on student performance. School effectiveness is also addressed in this report.

This report examines the vocational and training (VET) activities and experiences of non-completers of Year 12 in the initial post- school years. It investigates differences between those who participate in VET after leaving school and those who do not. It also reviews VET achievement examining results in the VET courses undertaken by non-completers. The report provides information on the characteristics and success rates of non-completers who participated in VET, concentrating on the characteristics and achievement levels of those non-completers who participated in VET according to their specific study programs. Narrated Voices Of African American Women In Academe, Sharon L. Holmes

Student Affairs Faculty Scholarship

This study was conducted to investigate the academic experiences of selected African American women faculty and administrators employed by two-year and four-year predominantly white institutions. The sample selection was purposeful, and three faculty members and two administrators agreed to participate. Each participant was interviewed on five separate occasions using an open-ended interview guide. Data analysis followed the standard inductive coding procedures articulated by Y. Lincoln and E. Guba (1985), and the constant comparative method (A. Strauss and J. Corbin, 1990) was used to generate theory in the study. Factors That Predict Academic Reputation Don't Always Predict Desire To Attend, Michael J. Conard, Maureen A. Conard

Psychology Faculty Publications

The study assessed indicators of educational quality and selectivity as predictors of Academic Reputation (AR) and desire to attend a college. Surveys were mailed to 1,004 high school seniors randomly selected from a large database, yielding 198 respondents. Educational quality indicators were regressed on AR. Curriculum rigor and social/cultural activities were significantly predictive of AR. Class size and individualized attention from faculty were not. Curriculum rigor and individualized faculty attention were predictive of desire to attend. Class size and social/cultural activities were not. Don’t be confused by Sharon Versyp’s personable demeanor and easy-going smile. Behind that exterior is a fiercely intense competitor who has worked hard and enjoyed success at every stop in her playing and professional career.

This made her first season as a head coach all the more challenging. Versyp took over an inexperienced squad that was further weakened by team injuries and departures. After being selected sixth in the preseason coaches poll, she led her team, made of just eight players at the end of the 2001-2002 campaign, to a respectable fourth-place finish.
