From Initial Education To Working Life: Making Transitions Work, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

The experiences of 14 countries in the OECD are examined in order to address the issue of transition from compulsory education to work change and how it changed in the 1990s. The report also examines the data in relation to the types of transition policies and how well they worked. The report also examines the complex and faceted national institutional arrangements that can result in successful transitions to working life. The report also examines the ways in which countries attempt to lay foundations for lifelong learning during the transition phase through changes to educational pathways and institutions.

Moral Philosophy For Children And Character Education, Michael Pritchard Dec 1999

Moral Philosophy For Children And Character Education, Michael Pritchard

Michael Pritchard

This paper discusses the growing prominence of character education and the role moral philosophy can play here. It examines the place of inquiry in character education, and the ways in which moral philosophy can help young people to develop the virtue of reasonableness. Reasonableness, as herein described, takes into account the views and feelings of others, the willingness to allow one’s views to be scrutinized by others, and the acceptance of some degree of uncertainty about whether one’s views are necessarily right. The paper illustrates ways in which philosophical exploration about morality can help children to cultivate reasonableness.

A New Approach To Optimization Under Monotonic Constraint, H Tuy, Luc Le Dec 1999

A New Approach To Optimization Under Monotonic Constraint, H Tuy, Luc Le

Dr Luc Tu Le

A new efficient branch and bound method is proposed for solving convex programs with an additional monotonic nonconvex constraint. Computational experiments demonstrated that this method is quite practical for solving rank k reverse convex programs with much higher values of k than previously considered in the literature and can be applied to a wider class of nonconvex problems.

The Vocational Interests Of 'White Collar' Workers Experiencing Unemployment After Compulsory Redundancy, Robert Simons, R Goddard, W Patton Dec 1999

The Vocational Interests Of 'White Collar' Workers Experiencing Unemployment After Compulsory Redundancy, Robert Simons, R Goddard, W Patton

Dr Robert Simons

This study investigated the interests and factor structure of the Vocational Interest Survey for Australia (VISA) in a sample of 344 white collar workers who had been unemployed for more than six months after being made redundant. This study replicated earlier findings that while unemployed individuals appear to respond with different mean interest levels on the VISA compared with the instrument's normative sample of secondary students, respondents appear to confirm a consistent underlying factor structure. The factor analyses, particularly the higher order factor analysis, suggest that a two-factor solution of the VISA data may be the most appropriate solution for …

New Skills For A New Economy: Adult Education's Key Role In Sustainin Economic Growth And Expanding Opportunity, John Comings, Andrew Sum, Johan Uvin Dec 1999

New Skills For A New Economy: Adult Education's Key Role In Sustainin Economic Growth And Expanding Opportunity, John Comings, Andrew Sum, Johan Uvin

John P. Comings

The role of adult education in sustaining economic growth and expanding opportunity in Massachusetts was explored. The analysis focused on the new basic skills needed for a new economy, groups lacking the new basic skills, the demand for adult basic education (ABE), funding for ABE, building basic skills through adult education, ABE's costs and benefits, and moving toward an integrated job training and ABE system. The following major challenges to building workers' skills were identified: (1) a language challenge; (2) an education credential challenge; and (3) a new literacy challenge. The following were among the recommendations offered for overcoming these …

School Characteristics And Parental Involvement: Factors That Influence Parental Participation In Their Children’S Schools, Abe Feuerstein Dec 1999

School Characteristics And Parental Involvement: Factors That Influence Parental Participation In Their Children’S Schools, Abe Feuerstein

Abe Feuerstein

Several school-level variables thought to influence the degree to which parents are involved in their children's education were explored. The author sought to clarify, both theoretically and empirically, the meaning of parent involvement. Also, several statistical regression models were developed on the basis of school characteristics. The models help to explain the variance in 9 categories of parent involvement. The results of this study indicate that many forms of parent involvement, such as the structure that parents create for students in the home environment, are not easily influenced by school-level variables. However, several forms of parent involvement, including parent volunteerism …

Daniel J. Belliveau

G207 is a multimutated, conditionally replicating herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) that is currently in clinical trial for patients with malignant glioma. G207 exhibits an efficient oncolytic activity in tumor cells, yet minimal toxicity in normal tissue when injected into the brains of HSV-susceptible mice or nonhuman primates. In this study, we evaluated the shedding and biodistribution of clinical-grade G207 after intracerebral inoculation (3 × 107 pfu) in four New World owl monkeys (Aotus nancymae). Using PCR analyses and viral cultures, neither infectious virus nor viral DNA was detected from tear, saliva, or vaginal secretion samples at any time …

School Governance : Research On Educational And Management Issues, John Ainley, Phil Mckenzie Dec 1999

School Governance : Research On Educational And Management Issues, John Ainley, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

In a number of countries the past 20 years have seen increases decentralisation of authority for a range of decisions to individual schools. A range of arguments has been advanced in support of decentralisation but a common belief is that shifting authority to schools will enhance the quality, effectiveness and responsiveness of public education. This paper argues decentralisation is not a unitary concept and can be applied to different elements of the teaching and learning environment: curriculum organisation, financial management, personnel management and resource allocation. Research that has investigated the impact of decentralisation itself on student learning outcomes has not …

Interpreting The Parameters Of A Multidimensional Rasch Model, W Wang, M Wilson, Ray Adams

Prof Ray Adams

This chapter introduces the multidimensional random coefficient multinomial logit model (MRCML) which can be applied to multidimensional polytomous test items. Two examples of real data analyses are followed to demonstrates the applications of the MRCML. A detailed discussion is made of interpretation of item parameters, in comparision to those derived from their corresponding unidimensional Rasch measurement models. Finally, it provides some guidelines for constructing scoring matrices and the corresponding models to aid parameter interpretation.

Understanding Children's Perspectives: Sixth Graders Talk About Their Art, Christine Mulcahey Dec 1999

Understanding Children's Perspectives: Sixth Graders Talk About Their Art, Christine Mulcahey

Christine Mulcahey

Abstract This exploratory study investigates children's perspectives on artistic representation. Unstructured weekly interviews with a group of sixth graders for ten weeks allowed for a negotiated and shared understanding of children's views. The talk of the children, in relation to a collection of each child's drawings, constitute the primary data for the study. Analysis of interview data suggests three primary themes: categories for understanding, a children's world, and children's talk about art. The children's categories for thinking about ideas and events appear to be flexible and tentative, and to allow for variation and subdivisions. The children's conversations suggest a distinct …

The Science Knowledge, Conceptions Of The Nature Of Science, Attitudes About Teaching Science, And Science Instructional Strategies Of Bilingual And English-Only Elementary Teachers, Adelina Alegria

Adelina Alegria

The goal of this study was to explore bilingual and English-only elementary teachers' science knowledge, their conceptions of the nature of science, their attitudes about teaching science, and their self-reported science instructional skills. In this study, a bilingual teacher was defined as a teacher who provides instruction in Spanish and English in core academic subjects and has completed and/or is completing a bilingual certification program. An English-only teacher was defined as a monolingual teacher that only speaks and instructs in English. The principal questions guiding this dissertation investigation were the following: How do bilingual elementary teachers differ from English-only elementary …

The Resource Implications Of Vet In Schools, Gerald Burke, Phil Mckenzie, Chandra Shah Dec 1999

The Resource Implications Of Vet In Schools, Gerald Burke, Phil Mckenzie, Chandra Shah

Dr Phillip McKenzie

This article is concerned with an aspect of the development of vocational education and training (VET) programs in schools, the likely resource implications of extending VET in schools. How much do VET programs cost, and how are those costs shared among the key parties involved, namely school systems, individual schools, VET providers, employers, and students? The level and distribution of costs are important, in terms of budgets for each party, but also for what they imply about the nature of VET programs in schools and students' access to them.

Cooperative Learning And Unity: The Perspectives Of Faculty, Students, And Ta's, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Hye Sun Moon, Donald Buchanan, Eric Shockman, Michael Jackson

Linda Serra Hagedorn

A program designed to encourage university faculty and teaching assistants (TAs) to use cooperative learning in undergraduate classrooms was evaluated through the perspectives of faculty, TAs and students. The program was part of an initiative called DiverSCity, and the evaluation focused on the initial climate and culture of the college and responses to a series of faculty seminars conducted to introduce faculty to collaborative instruction and to encourage its use for the creation of diversity. Three surveys were administered in the spring semester 1998 to a sample of faculty, the population of TAs, and the senior student cohort. The response …
