School-Industry Programs National Survey 1996, John Ainley, Marianne Fleming
School-Industry Programs National Survey 1996, John Ainley, Marianne Fleming
Dr John Ainley
In the present Australian context, school-industry programs are educational courses for Year 11 and/or Year 12 students that require students to spend time in the workplace as part of a structured experience that is recognised as part or their formal studies. This report is based on the second national survey of the extent and characteristics of those programs. It has as its principal aim the monitoring of the scale and characteristics of school-industry programs and is based on information from schools which enrolled students in Years 11 and 12 during 1996. The information encompasses the extent to which school-industry programs …

The Charlottesville Volunteer Tutorial, known locally as Book Buddies, is a one-to-one community volunteer tutorial that is an integral part of the Charlottesville City Schools' plan to ensure that all first- and second-grade children learn to read. Analyses of the first 3 cohorts reveal the growing efficacy of the program. Participants with greater than 40 sessions significantly outperformed participants with fewer than 40 sessions on most pre- and posttest gain scores and on both outcome measures of text reading and word recognition. Effect size for word recognition in Cohort III was +1.29, considerably higher than effect sizes reported for other …

Differential Expression Of Gap Junctions In Neurons And Astrocytes Dervied From P19 Embryonal Carcinoma Cells, Daniel Belliveau, J. Bechberger, K. Rodgers, C. Naus
Daniel J. Belliveau
The P19 embryonal carcinoma cell line represents a pluripotential stem cell that can differentiate along the neural or muscle cell lineage when exposed to different environments. Exposure to retinoic acid induces P19 cells to differentiate into neurons and astrocytes that express similar developmental markers as their embryonic counterparts. We examined the expression of gap junction genes during differentiation of these stem cells into neurons and astrocytes. Untreated P19 cells express at least two gap junction proteins, connexins 26 and 43. Connexin32 could not be detected in these cells. Treatment for 96 hr with 0.3 mM retinoic acid induced the P19 …

The Multidimensional Random Coefficients Multinomial Logit Model, Ray Adams, M Wilson, W Wang
Prof Ray Adams
A multidimensional Rasch-type item response model, the multidimensional random coefficients multinomial logit model, is presented as an extension to the Adams and Wilson (1996) random coefficients multinomial logit model. The model is developed in a form that permits generalization to the multidimensional case of a wide class of Rasch models, including the simple logistic model, Masters' partial credit model, Wilson's ordered partition model, and Fischer's linear logistic model. Moreover, the model includes several existing multidimensional models as special cases, including Whitely's multicomponent latent trait model, Andersen's multidimensional Rasch model for repeated testing, and Embretson's multidimensional Rasch model for learning and …

Economic Literacy Project: School Report - Year 11: Pilot Study, Capricornia Region, 1997, Dieter Kotte, Petra Lietz
Dr Petra Lietz
This report of the study of year 11 economics students in the Capricornia region of Queensland is comprised of descriptive statistics and results of the economic literacy survey conducted in September 1997. For the purpose of this study, economic literacy was defined as the knowledge required to understand news about economic issues in the media. In addition teachers completed background surveys which examined their teaching experience, qualifications, and teaching methods, as well as school size, school resources and enrolment figures in 'economics'.
Blocking Nerve Growth Factor Binding To The P75 Neurotrophin Receptor On Sympathetic Neurons Transiently Reduces Trka Activation But Does Not Affect Neuronal Survival, C. Lachance, Daniel Belliveau, P. Barker
Blocking Nerve Growth Factor Binding To The P75 Neurotrophin Receptor On Sympathetic Neurons Transiently Reduces Trka Activation But Does Not Affect Neuronal Survival, C. Lachance, Daniel Belliveau, P. Barker
Daniel J. Belliveau
Nerve growth factor interacts with the trkA tyrosine kinase receptor and with the p75 neurotrophin receptor. It is clear that trkA mediates most, if not all, of the stereotypical responses of sympathetic neurons to nerve growth factor but the role of the p75 neurotrophin receptor is unclear. In this study, we have asked whether a functional interaction between p75 neurotrophin receptor and trkA exists in primary sympathetic neurons by disrupting nerve growth factor binding to p75 neurotrophin receptor. Acute assays reveal that blocking antibodies directed against p75 neurotrophin receptor reduce nerve growth factor-mediated trkA tyrosine phosphorylation and reduce the amount …

Transgenic Mice Expressing The Intracellular Domain Of The P75 Neurotrophin Receptor Undergo Neuronal Apoptosis, M. Majdan, C. Lachance, A. Gloster, R. Aloyz, C. Zeindler, S. Bamji, A. Bhakar, Daniel Belliveau, J. Fawcett, F. Miller, P. Barker
Daniel J. Belliveau
We have asked whether p75NTR may play a role in neuronal apoptosis by producing transgenic mice that express the p75NTR intracellular domain within peripheral and central neurons. These animals showed profound reductions in numbers of sympathetic and peripheral sensory neurons as well as cell loss in the neocortex, where there is normally little or no p75NTR expression. Developmental loss of facial motor neurons was not observed, but induced expression of the p75NTR intracellular domain within adult animals led to increased motor neuron death after axotomy. Biochemical analyses suggest that these effects were not attributable to a p75NTR-dependent reduction in trk …

Applications Of Item Response Theory In The Third International Mathematics And Science Study, E Gonzalez, Ray Adams, Marg Wu
Prof Ray Adams
The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is a survey of mathematics and science achievement sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. With more than 45 participating countries, three target populations, more than thirty languages, 15,000 schools, more than half a million students, TIMSS is the largest and most ambitious international study of educational achievement ever undertaken. Students participating in the assessment were administered one of eight achievement tests that contain items in mathematics and science, using a variety of item formats. As TIMSS is an international study, many audiences will look at the results …

During the past decade new approaches to educational measurement have become more widely recognized and the use of computer programs has been developed to make sound use of the procedures and techniques associated with item response theory. However, the implications of these developments for research methodology have not yet been fully recognized. This Encyclopedia will address not only these changes for which the extent of developments are currently becoming evident but will also look forward to the major advances in the methods employed in empirical research which will arise from the use of improved measurement and scaling procedures. The Encyclopedia is …

Law Review Story, Lisa Pruitt
Lisa R Pruitt
This essay is the story of the author’s election as editor-in-chief of the Arkansas Law Review and of her tenure in that role. The story implicates a range of legal issues including hate speech, sexual harassment, sex discrimination, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It is also the tale of the author’s feminist epiphany and of the law school’s failure to respond to the harassment. It was published in the 50th anniversary issue of the Arkansas Law Review.
The Acquisition Of Literacy In A Non-Native Language By Two Hispanic First Graders In A Mainstream Classroom. Dissertation, Linda Evans
Linda S. Evans
The purpose of the study was to provide an in-depth view or the processes employed by two Hispanic first-grade children for the simultaneous development of English language and English literacy skills in a mainstream classroom. As a qualitative case study utilizing naturalistic inquiry with an emergent design, the study included detailed observations of the school, school personnel, classroom environment, instruction, and the two students.
The major guiding question follows: How do first grade students who are limited in their English proficiency experience the dual processes of acquiring the English language and acquiring English literacy in a mainstream classroom?
