Applied Thermoplastic Screw Plastication Theory: Industry Acceptance And Implications For Plastics Processing Education, Paul V. Engelmann Dec 1988

Applied Thermoplastic Screw Plastication Theory: Industry Acceptance And Implications For Plastics Processing Education, Paul V. Engelmann

Dissertations

Rapid expansion of the thermoplastics processing industry has increased the need for plastics education and training. Screw plastication is the major method of melting plastics in order to mold or extrude them into useful products. Thus, information about the role of plastication is needed to provide guidance for plastics education and training.

This study sought confirmation of suspected differences existing in the amount of knowledge personnel have about thermoplastic screw plastication, dependent upon: (a) the type of plastics process used, and (b) their job classifications. Furthermore, the study collected data in three additional areas: (1) the extent to which persons …

The Effects Of Leadership Style And Work Setting On The Job Satisfaction Of Teachers Of The Trainable Mentally Impaired, John Charles Woods

Dissertations

This study examined the effect that leadership style and work setting would have on the job satisfaction of teachers of the trainable mentally impaired (TMI). Leadership style was based on the adaptability score from the LEAD Other instrument by Hersey and Blanchard (1982). Work setting was defined by one of three teaching situations, (1) integrated, with one or two teachers of the TMI working in a regular education building; (2) clustered, with three or more teachers of the TMI working in a regular education building; or (3) segregated, with teachers of the TMI working in a separate facility. Job satisfaction …

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate decision-makers' opinions about what was to be contained in comprehensive sex education programs, the degree to which decision makers believed course information was likely to be part of their own curriculum, and how much support they believed the community would give to various parts of the curriculum.

The instrument used in the study was created by combining parts of surveys by Wayne (1981) and Marini and Jones (1983). The study compared the opinions of decision makers about guidelines to be used when implementing sex education, reasons for offering sex education, reasons for …

There was an examination in this study of the relationship of classroom experiences (cues) and professorial initiative to the frequency of informal student-faculty interaction in the freshman year. The research was conducted at an independent, four-year urban college in the state of Michigan with a predominantly commuter population. A survey instrument was administered to the entire freshman class in the Spring semester of 1988. Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Experimental and control groups were randomly selected in Johnny Douglas' sixth grade homeroom class to determine if contacts made to an experimental group of parents produced different perceptions of school as opposed to a control group of parents who received little or no contacts from the school. The experimental group of students' parents received a minimum of seven contacts from the school during the twenty day period of the study, while the control group received a minimum of three contacts in the same period.

Creativity In Teaching, Evadna Caroline Worley Dec 1988

Creativity In Teaching, Evadna Caroline Worley

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study is to clear the air of an illusive concept: creativity in teaching. Because there were 125 authorities' attributes used to define "creativity", these attributes were explored and listed on a matrix. A new definition was derived and applied to the concept of creativity. After a discussion of the matrix of attributes and the chronological table of authorities, seven main divisions of creativity were explored. Applying the new definition of creativity, conditions and basic principles for creative teaching are discussed. The conclusion gives teachers a constructive direction toward the concept of creativity in teaching. An appendix …

A Demographic Evaluation Of The Certification Qualifications Of Secondary Science Teachers With Implications For School Administrators, Joan S. Bowen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This population study of the certification qualifications of the secondary science teachers of the Upper East Tennessee region in 1984-85 was conducted to determine if there was a qualification shortage in any science-teaching area at the beginning of the Comprehensive Education Reform Act (CERA). Data were obtained from the Tennessee State Department of Education Preliminary Report Forms for Staff. Subject certification data and 1984-85 teaching assignment were analyzed to find percentages of infield, out-of-field teaching and the size of the internal pool of active certificated science teachers who were not teaching. Results of these analyses were presented for each system …

Measuring Interest In Mathematics, P Gardner, Siek Toon Khoo Nov 1988

Measuring Interest In Mathematics, P Gardner, Siek Toon Khoo

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

This paper reports on the development of instruments for measuring secondary school student interests in mathematics. Interest in mathematics is regarded as having three components (topics, activities and motives), each with several dimensions. Nearly all instruments employed summated ratings (Likert) procedures, but one adopted an unusual procedure, based on Zuckerman's (1960) Affect Adjective Checklist. Six instruments were developed altogether: IMT (interest in various mathematical topics), ILA (interest in learning activities), MCI (mathematics related career inventory), NMI (nature of motives inventory), GIM (general interest in mathematics) and AAC (affect adjective checklist). The IMT instrument, containing seven scales, was developed to measure …

Secondary School Size, Operating Costs And Curriculum Structure, Phil Mckenzie Nov 1988

Secondary School Size, Operating Costs And Curriculum Structure, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

Proponents of increases in average school size commonly employ two main arguments: bigger schools are less expensive to operate than small schools, and they are better able to meet students' educational needs through the provision of more extensive curricula. This paper examines these arguments in the case of Victorian government secondary schools, using data relating to the 1984 school year. It presents results which suggest that while size brings considerable advantages, plateau effects begin to appear at relatively low enrolment levels. The paper comprises five main sections: an outline of the conceptual background to the study; a description of the …
