The high dropout rate of first-semester freshmen in a small, church-related college was addressed by the implementation of an organized recreation/activity strategy. This strategy was designed to provide appropriate entertainment and to contribute to a positive environment in order to integrate first-semester freshmen into the college environment and thereby increase retention. Evaluation instruments measured student--as well as faculty, staff, and administration--satisfaction with the campus environment and social/recreational activities. Moreover participation was monitored to assess the level of involvement. Numerous problems exist. Liability and travel time are cited as critical reasons for school nonparticipation. Telepresentation Debating eliminates these problems. The feasibility of maintaining the integrity of the debate process was tested by simulating a televised debate among three separate schools in the target area called Telepresentation Debating. A Demographic Survey Of English As A Second Language Students At The Borough Of Manhattan Community College., Linda R. Markstein

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

In 1985, the Faculty Council of the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) passed a resolution that severely limited the courses that English as a second language (ESL) students could take outside of the developmental area. As a result of this resolution, ESL students were getting much less exposure to print than they had previously; thus, a critical need developed for new materials that offered beginning and low-intermediate level ESL students significant exposure to reading and that integrated reading and writing so that these students could efficiently and effectively develop their English skills. The need for new materials meeting these …

While the literature has generally shown no negative impacts of telecourses on academic performance, questions remain about the quality of the learning experience and how well this medium serves the needs of the diverse student types being served by colleges today. As the involvement of Tidewater Community College (TCC) in telecourse instruction has increased over the past few years, so too has the need to …

Proofreading to produce a mailable copy in a typewriting class is a major problem. Often proofreading is not taught but assumed to occur naturally as an intrinsic value to students. (Sustaita, 1983) Literature reveals many techniques on how to proofread, but does not address the problem of how to motivate students enough to continually and meticulously proofread their work. This practicum proposes to address this problem by first testing to measure the students skill in a secondary typewriting class. Secondly, this practicum proposes to teach and to test the use of proofreaders symbols and the identification of errors as a basis …
