Science Articulation K-12, Gary E. Downs
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
I think it is important that we know what I am going to discuss; therefore I feel I should define articulation. Definition of Articulation - the action or manner of jointing or interrelating; the state of being jointed or systematically interrelated into a whole; interrelation of different levels of education (as elementary education, secondary education, and higher education) for ensuring continuous advancement of learning. Using this definition I would now like to take a look at our educational structure.

Actual Teaching Assignments Call For Broader Pre-Service Training For Chemistry-Physics Teachers, Robert W. Hanson
Actual Teaching Assignments Call For Broader Pre-Service Training For Chemistry-Physics Teachers, Robert W. Hanson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Full-time physics teachers are rare in Iowa's high schools-information on record with the Iowa Department of Public Instruction indicates that there are only eleven in the entire state. Full-time chemistry teachers are not much more common-the records show that there are 33 in Iowa. The most common combination involving physics includes chemistry, with 62.5 percent of all physics teachers teaching chemistry and 52.5 percent of all chemistry teachers teaching physics. Most of the 240 teachers who teach both subjects teach a third subject as well. Tables 1 and 2 show the numbers of teaching combinations that include chemistry or physics …

Collegiate Programs For Secondary Students: Meeting The Needs Of The Talented, Edward L. Pizzini, Charles Philp
Collegiate Programs For Secondary Students: Meeting The Needs Of The Talented, Edward L. Pizzini, Charles Philp
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The concept "meeting the needs of the individual student" has been paid lip service for years within educational circles. Whether this has in fact been carried out to any appreciable extent is still open to question. Since the inception of the Secondary Science Training Programs (SSTP) by the National Science Foundation in 1959, hundreds of colleges and universities have sponsored special science programs for high-ability students. However, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare stated in November, 1973, that fewer than four percent of this country's talented secondary students were being exposed to programs commensurate with their needs (Williams, 1973). …

The Mini-Patt Approach To Individualizing Instruction, Jimmy R. Jenkins, Gerald H. Krockover
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In the past, the preparation of audio-tutorial tapes has been tedious and time-consuming. In order to produce a commercial quality audio-tutorial tape, the instructor had to outline the format of the presentation, gather the necessary materials, and prepare a rough tape. This tape was then transcribed into a script, the script was edited (usually by the instructor) and a final tape for instructional purposes was prepared from the edited script. Usually the above sequence of steps required approximately eight to ten hours, which would be spread over a two- or three-day period, with the end product being a 30-minute reel-to-reel …

A Model For Implementing Individualization In The Science Classroom, Barton Philipps
A Model For Implementing Individualization In The Science Classroom, Barton Philipps
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Teachers today find themselves in the middle of tremendous education changes and as teachers they will be expected to play an important part in implementing course revisions. Which part shall they play? Some have closed their eyes to the new directions and hope they will go away, but like the ostrich these teachers are just fooling themselves. The numbers of open classroom elementary schools are increasing and the traditional ways of presenting science in the high schools will encounter greater student resentment. It therefore behooves teachers to begin to look for a way to introduce change in their classroom. What …
Take Time, Suzanne Kelly
Take Time, Suzanne Kelly
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
For several years the plea has been to individualize experiences in the classroom. Techniques in room structures (pods, movable walls, learning centers) and in teaching methods (contracts, team-teaching, open classroom concepts) attempted to set the stage for such individualization. Classrooms with permanent rows and every child on every page in every textbook on every day became known as traditional and were highly frowned upon by many educators. Teachers wanted to meet the needs of each child but were not necessarily skilled to do so.

Over the past several years I have watched with special interest our appeal for increased membership from the ranks of our elementary teachers of the state. This appeal has been answered with increased numbers of elementary teachers taking active roles in the various science activities sponsored in whole or in part by the Iowa Science Teachers Section of the Iowa Academy.
The Effects Of Stimulants On The Pulse Rate, Darrell Young
The Effects Of Stimulants On The Pulse Rate, Darrell Young
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
A recent article in Science by Maugh II (1973), dealing with the possible relationship between coffee and heart disease, inspired me to develop and execute a laboratory exercise designed to measure the effects of stimulants on the body. This exercise was, of course, designed to only measure immediate short-term effects, since long-term effects are obviously more difficult to measure.
