A request was made by the principal of John Marshall High School to the guidance staff that experimentation be done in the area of group counseling. The writer, who had previously served on the guidance staff and subsequently as a teacher, agreed to coordinate the experiment. In addition to the coordinator, two teachers and two counselors assisted in the implementation and performance of the experiment.

The objective of the experiment was to see whether there was improvement in citizenship and academic achievement manifested as a result of the experiment in group counseling of problem students. With this objective in mind …

It was the purpose of this study (1) to compare the two groups, in certain specific characteristics and abilities; (2) to show that a difference existed between the two groups in such areas as: vita1 statistics, home environment, school record, intelligence, reading ability, and aptitude; (3) to present statistical evidence that a significant difference did exist between the two groups; and (4) to draw conclusions based upon the data which would serve as a basis for decision-making at the junior high level.

This 1965 Report of the Higher Education Commission, appointed by Governor Albertis S. Harrison, Jr., was created to review higher education in Virginia to be used as a basis for long-range planning by the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Commission was led by Senator Lloyd C. Bird and supported by the staff of the State Council for Higher Education. Divided into eleven sections, this 200-page report details information including geographical location of students, library services, and different instructional services.
