Single Mothers In College: The Effect Of Selected Variables, Rickey Booker
Single Mothers In College: The Effect Of Selected Variables, Rickey Booker
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Single parent mothers who are currently in poverty may find it difficult to find routes out of poverty and/or even to enrolling in college. Little empirical research has been conducted on low-income single parent mothers who attempt to enroll, persist and graduate college. The current research has shown that single parents are at a high risk of dropping out of college because of many barriers including poverty related issues. This study examined women who had at least one child or dependent, were in poverty, and were first time beginners in college. The purpose for conducting this study was to identify …

Data for students in the study was collected for comprehension levels or acuity (CTB/McGraw-Hill, 2010), text gradient levels (Fountas & Pinnell, 2008), and oral fluency levels (Berglund & Johns, 2006; Fountas & Pinnell, 2008) during year two of their teachers‘ participation in the training.

This qualitative research study examines the construct of leadership styles as perceived by the principals and the teachers. The research questions of this study are as follows:
1. What is the perception of principals and select teachers of the leadership style of five principals at low SES area elementary schools (kindergarten through eighth grade) that achieve adequate yearly progress overall for 3 …

Defining Well-Being From Inside The Navajo Nation: Education As Poverty Derivation And Poverty Reduction, Donald R. Baum
Theses and Dissertations
The stated purpose of this study was to facilitate Navajos through a process of determining for themselves what poverty is, what indicators determine well-being, and what factors contribute to the phenomenon of poverty on the Navajo Indian reservation. The study used a Q-Squared Participatory Poverty Assessment to gain a better understanding of how the Navajo culture and Navajo people themselves view and operationalize wealth and poverty. Semi-structured participatory interviews performed with 22 Navajo Indians, in the reservation communities of Chinle, Arizona, and San Juan, New Mexico, discussed and determined what it means to be poor in Navajo households and communities, …
The Impact Of The Physical Environment On The Social Integration Of Individuals With Disabilities In Community, Keith M. Christensen
The Impact Of The Physical Environment On The Social Integration Of Individuals With Disabilities In Community, Keith M. Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Social integration in community is especially important for individuals with disabilities well-being. Although individuals with disabilities reside within the community's physical environment, they are often marginalized in the social environment. This may be the result of individuals with disabilities residing in physical environments that negatively affect opportunities for integration in the social environment. However, there has been little investigation to understand the impact of the physical environment on the social integration of individuals with disabilities in community.
The purpose of this investigation was to (a) examine the current body of evidence concerning the impact of a community's physical environment on …
The Effects Of Teacher Ideology On Student Performance As Related To Poverty And Ethnicity, Jessica Webb
The Effects Of Teacher Ideology On Student Performance As Related To Poverty And Ethnicity, Jessica Webb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to explore the impact of teacher ideology on student performance. A definition of teacher ideology was drawn from the pupil control ideology, PCI, created by Willower, Eidell and Hoy (1967). Research concerned with teacher ideology has suggested that there is a definite difference between the custodial ideology and the humanistic ideology (Gaffney, 1997). In particular, the custodial teacher views rules and regulations as a priority, while the humanistic teacher views the student as the priority. Factors which influenced student achievement, such as socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and behavior in relation to how teacher ideology affects student performance …
The Culture Of Poverty: How It Affects Middle School Students, Kaycie Anne Tuttle
The Culture Of Poverty: How It Affects Middle School Students, Kaycie Anne Tuttle
All Graduate Projects
In education, teachers are seeing more impoverished students than ever before. With that understanding, teachers need to know how to identify and assist these students so that they are successful in school. The War on Poverty has been going on for years, and with a failing economy, teachers are seeing more impoverished students in their classrooms. To counteract this situation, teachers will be shown a pamphlet, power point presentation, and a workshop on poverty which will help show teachers what their students may be experiencing when away from school. In addition, the pamphlet will provide information of what to look …
Changing Diversity In U.S. Schools: The Impact On Elementary Student Performance And Achievement, Jennifer Karyn Clayton
Changing Diversity In U.S. Schools: The Impact On Elementary Student Performance And Achievement, Jennifer Karyn Clayton
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Schools in the United States have experienced changes in their demographic profile during the last half century. During this changing time, schools have experienced court involved desegregation and have experienced fluctuations in their populations with regard to both race and socioeconomic status. Existing studies on segregation have focused primarily on Black and White students, neglecting the increasing Hispanic population of U.S. schools. This study provides more data to the expanding research on the impact of diversity on student performance. The study examined whether diversity and teacher quality of a school can predict academic performance on state-mandated tests, while controlling for …

Reaching The Poorest Through Microfinance: Learning From Saving For Change Program In Mali, Mukul Acharya
Open Access Dissertations
This study used secondary data to analyze the Saving for Change (SfC) program of Oxfam America in Mali. SfC uses a model of microfinance that is based on education and savings-led approach and self-help methodology. The program teaches the poorest women how to form and manage a group to handle savings and credit related needs. The group learns to systematically collect savings from its members; lend the money to its members with interest and keep a record of all transactions. SfC has created an oral recordkeeping system which is helpful for groups that have mostly or all illiterate women. The …
Head Start Parents' Perceptions Of Parental Involvement During Their Children's Transition To Kindergarten : A Phenomenological Study, Dawn Angela Barberis
Head Start Parents' Perceptions Of Parental Involvement During Their Children's Transition To Kindergarten : A Phenomenological Study, Dawn Angela Barberis
Dissertations and Theses
Schools are recognizing the importance of parent involvement in children's education, but they often struggle to work with families living in poverty whose definition of parent partnership may differ from that of school staff (Lareau, 1987). Parents who live in poverty may feel inferior to school staff due to their lack of economic and educational resources. They may lack the expertise to be able to effectively communicate and work with school staff in making decisions that affect their children. With the increased expectations that schools place on families in supporting their children's education, this mismatch between the resources and experiences …

Sensory Integration Dysfunction In Urban Head Start Populations: Why Children Have This Disorder And What Teachers Can Do About It, Helen Frazier
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This paper addresses the environmental causes of and treatment for sensory integration disorder among children living in urban poverty. Established and current research is examined in order to provide a foundation for the practical aspects of this paper. This paper presents a general description of a Head Start program designed to support sensory integration and includes specific activities that support the tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular sensory systems. It concludes that, as a result of pre- and post-natal environmental factors that interfere with effective sensory integration, many Head Start children are not yet ready to learn to read.
Where Are We Going?, Tricia Weeks
Where Are We Going?, Tricia Weeks
Honors Theses
Today's society requires more improved skills and more advanced education in order to succeed as a member of the society and as an individual. The problem of providing education and specialized skills belongs to the nation's schools. Many students, however, find the struggle for an education too difficult and resolve that immediate problem by dropping out of school. Dropping out indicates the student's unwillingness or incapacity to absorb society's more refined tools and knowledge. From this point on, the climb out of the lower socio-economic class is relatively impossible.
The term "dropout" generally refers to pupils who leave school before …
