An Examination Of Factors Impacting The Career Decisions Of Black Women In Management Positions At Us Institutions Of Higher Education, Kimberly Mckinsey-Mabry

Education Doctoral

Research during the last decade indicates that while Black women have been graduating from college and entering the academic workforce at increasing rates, they continue to be underrepresented in managerial and administrative positions at institutions of higher education. As colleges and universities in the United States face demands to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse society, educational leaders will need to find ways to address the opportunity for diverse leadership growth. One strategy to address this opportunity is to identify the personal and professional factors that influence the career choices of Black women who work at institutions of higher …

A Qualitative Study On The Experiences Black Adolescent Females Have With Cyber-Bullying In An Urban High School Environment, Paul Miller Dec 2011

A Qualitative Study On The Experiences Black Adolescent Females Have With Cyber-Bullying In An Urban High School Environment, Paul Miller

Education Doctoral

This study examines and analyzes the effects of cyberbullying among adolescent Black females in an urban setting. This population is largely excluded from Digital Youth Culture (DYC) research within cyberbullying literature (Patchin & Hinduja, 2006), even though such research is clearly warranted. To understand school violence, students must be viewed as social actors, experiencing the negative ramifications of DYC in school. These ramifications result from an imbalance of power generated through the use of aggressive tactics designed to damage a teen’s reputation, social status, and emotional well being. Currently, no research reports how cyberbullying manifests itself in an urban context, …

A Phenomenological Study Of “Organizational Development Targeting Diversity” In A Nonprofit Human Service Organization, Christopher Henry Hinesley Dec 2011

A Phenomenological Study Of “Organizational Development Targeting Diversity” In A Nonprofit Human Service Organization, Christopher Henry Hinesley

Education Doctoral

This study explores the experiences of non-profit human service staff members engaged in “organizational development targeting diversity” (ODTD) for two years or more. This term was adapted by combining concepts in workforce diversity management (Cox, 1993; Ely & Thomas, 1996) and intra-organizational oppression (Fine, 1996; Hyde, 1998). Drawing upon Crenshaw’s (1989) theory of intersecting oppressions stemming from race, class, and gender stratification, the experiences of staff members in a nonprofit human services organization provided a window into an organization attempting to address its use of power and how to model empowerment for a disempowered clientele. This study was conducted using …

Cultivating Readiness For Professional Learning Community Through Learning Teams In A Restructuring High School, Cassandra H. Hyacinthe

Education Doctoral

The traditional organizational structure of large comprehensive high schools: departmental divisions, teacher isolation, fragmented subcultures, student alienation, and competing group interests have undermined student and adult learning and have thwarted attempts at school reform. Professional learning communities (PLCs) are a promising strategy for advancing student achievement and school reform. Schools with strong PLCs foster a collaborative culture, focus on learning, promote shared responsibility, and pursue results-oriented goals and assessments to ensure student academic gains. The study investigated the use of learning teams as a preliminary strategy for PLC and to inform school-wide PLC implementation in a restructuring high school. Wenger’s …

The Effect Of A Cognitive Model, Thinking Maps, On The Academic Language Development Of English Language Learners, Estrella López Aug 2011

The Effect Of A Cognitive Model, Thinking Maps, On The Academic Language Development Of English Language Learners, Estrella López

Education Doctoral

This study describes how teachers of two urban suburban schools with large numbers of English language learners (ELLs) used Thinking Maps as a cognitive model resulting in student’s improved academic language development. Teachers used Thinking Maps that included a common cognitive language that transcended grade levels and disciplines. An antecedent condition for these results was school-wide professional development of teachers’ expertise using Thinking Maps. Teachers’ anecdotal reports and samples of student work gave evidence to this researcher’s hypothesis: participating schools that implemented cognitive visual tools improved the academic language development of all their students. A phenomenological methodology was used to …

The Perception Of Organizational Climate Of Inclusivity Moderated By Commitment: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Stanley Byrd

Education Doctoral

Empirical studies about diversity in healthcare organizations have shown that those organizations have been slow to embrace diversity management (Dreaschlin, Weech-Maldonado, & Dansky, 2004). This study explores whether the ability to retain employees is connected to the employee’s perception that the organization possesses an inclusive environment. The study was conducted at an upstate New York University Medical Center. This research built on existing studies related to the importance of creating a climate of inclusivity in organizations as an important component of specialized diversity recruitment. Specifically, the study tested whether there is a difference in the perceptions of the presence of …

The Effects Of Teacher Personality Characteristics And Formal Training On Students’ Reporting Bullying In The Middle School, Kristin E. Talleyrand Aug 2011

The Effects Of Teacher Personality Characteristics And Formal Training On Students’ Reporting Bullying In The Middle School, Kristin E. Talleyrand

Education Doctoral

Bullying is a widespread and serious issue for students in the United States. Many students who are bullied do not report it to a teacher or other staff member. This correlational research study investigated four questions: (a) Is there a relationship between the first choice of a staff member to whom a student would report bullying incidents and that staff member's personality characteristics, as assessed by the MyersBriggs Type Indicator, (b) Is there a relationship between the certificated staff member identified least frequently to whom a student would report bullying incidents and that staff member's personality characteristics, as assessed by …

An Examination Of The Management Practices And Perceptions Of Chief Advancement Officers And How They View The Relationship With Alumni, Kelly L. Brennan

Education Doctoral

Today, in the United States, there are more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations (Urban Institute, National Center for Charitable Statistics, 2009). These n onprofits rely on people’s time and financial support in order to advance their organizations. The task of advancing organizations through financial and voluntary efforts is complicated. Given the unstable economy, this reliance on financial and voluntary efforts has become even more pronounced. One example of nonprofit organizations is American colleges and universities. Higher education, like most other industries, has been affected by the unpredictable economy, especially the financial crisis that began in the fall of 2008 (Council …

Career Orientations Of New York State Assistant Superintendents For Instruction: A Quantitative Study, Linda L. Mcginley

Education Doctoral

This research study is an examination of the career orientations of assistant superintendents for instruction in New York State public school districts, excluding those in New York City. Career orientations represent an individual’s self-perceived talents, needs and values and address the question of what drives and gives direction to a career over the long term (Schein, 1996). While ASI’s are the district leaders primarily responsible for system-wide achievement of The No Child Behind Act (2001) accountability targets, less than a handful of research studies have focused on these crucial leaders. The purpose of the proposed study was to identify the …

Transformational Leadership: A Contribution To The Effectiveness Of Congregationally Formed Faith-Based Community Development Corporations, Harry A. Dawkins Iii

Education Doctoral

This study explored transformational leadership theory, which is well documented and the subject of considerable research. Four components known as the four I ’ s make up transformational leadership: (a) charisma or idealized influence, (b) inspirational motivation, (c) intellectual stimulation, and (d) individual consideration. Most transformational leadership research has focused on leadership behavior related to these four components, but little has been done to gain a deeper understanding of the transformational leadership behaviors of senior pastors who oversee congregationally formed faith-based community development corporations (CDCs). This study used quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (narrative interviews) empirical research, carried out with senior …
