A Handbook For An Advisory Program In The Middle School, Deborah E. Brewer

All Graduate Projects

The transescent child is in a state of metamorphosis in body, mind, emotions and value system. Because of these extreme changes, middle level students often experience feelings of inadequacy which result in poor school performance. The enhancement of self esteem through the development of an advisory program handbook is the goal of this project. This handbook will include units which promote student self concept and acceptance and in turn create an environment more conducive to student success and achievement.

Evaluating The Effect Of Project H.O.P.E.: An After-School Study Hall, Eugene Joseph Schmidt

All Graduate Projects

The effectiveness of Project HOPE, an acronym for Helping Our People Educationally, was tested to determine if improved academic achievement would result from an after-school study hall. Intended for ninth grade students that fall behind because of uncompleted daily work and missed assignments, Project HOPE was created to give students "a last chance." It was thought that daily work scores would rise and that students would realize an overall increase in their final course grades. The actual experiment was run from November 19, 1984 until January 17, 1985. The experimental group was the writer's tenth grade English class. Despite improvements …

All Graduate Projects

Children's literature can enliven and enrich a social studies program. The role of children's literature in content subjects, especially social studies on the elementary level was studied. The types of children's literature which can be used in social studies, namely informational books, biographies, historical fiction, were also studied. In addition bibliographies were consulted for repeated mention of the best selections. Based upon the findings cited above a selected annotated bibliography of selections of poetry and children's books was produced for use in a fifth grade study of the United States.

Interpersonal Interactions In Student-Teacher Relationships: Types And Effect On Student Achievememt, Cheryl S. Spivey

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the types of interpersonal interactions, in student-teacher relationships, that have an effect on student achievement. These essential conditions of communication have been labeled: warmth, empathy, respect, genuineness, concreteness, self-disclosure, immediacy, and confrontation. Communication of these conditions, by teachers to students, shows a significant effect on student achievement when observed by classroom researchers. This investigation has also addressed the efficiency of training procedures used with groups of teachers who participated in the research studies, the results of which support the increasing awareness of human-relations development.

This paper is addressed to the need of revising a teacher-training plan used in the refugee camp of Vietnamese and Cambodian victims of war. My personal experience in teaching the refugees served as an impetus in making the revised training plan that will seek to answer the following questions:

2. What language elements can be infused in the training plan that will help uplift the low sagging morale …

Learning Patterns: Inborn Or Acquired Stubbborness? Or To Hell And Back, June Levinsohn Jan 1985

Learning Patterns: Inborn Or Acquired Stubbborness? Or To Hell And Back, June Levinsohn

MA TESOL Collection

This paper examines the origins of and effects on my teaching of several personal and professional conflicts with the teacher-training process, and with subsequent classroom teaching. I describe their development in relation to my previous education, work experience, and mental "habits," and compare my prior medical training with that of a language teacher. Particular attention is paid to how the different epistemologies have affected my outlook as a teacher.

I use a recent teaching experience with Cambodian refugees in North Carolina to illustrate these conflicts--e.g., the problems that developed by attempting to create an ESL syllabus in the same spiral …

Developing Awareness Of Individuals In A Group Learning Context: A Self-Lesson Plan, Leslie Maria Turpin Jan 1985

Developing Awareness Of Individuals In A Group Learning Context: A Self-Lesson Plan, Leslie Maria Turpin

MA TESOL Collection

This paper addresses the question of how teachers teach themselves to be better teachers. Central to the paper are my assumptions that long range learning is self-directed and that the development of self-awareness is essential to growth in both learning and teaching. The paper is a case study tracing my own learning of one of my teaching objectives and is divided into three interrelated sections. The first section is a description of a model for teacher self-teaching: "the self-lesson plan." The model is a structure that teachers can use to guide themselves in the study of their own teaching objectives. …

Beginning With Pictures, Edward J. Ruggiero Jan 1985

Beginning With Pictures, Edward J. Ruggiero

This paper shows how simple drawings were used to teach English to a beginning-level language class. It contains a syllabus outlining the material covered in a ten-week course and reproductions of the pictures with commentary on how they were drawn and used. The main objective in using this type of drawing was to help students find the meaning of language within themselves, as they created it. The effectiveness of these pictures in teaching basic English led to the included in-depth analysis of how humans perceive, the elementary state of mind and viewpoint (as seen in the works of three groups …

Twenty-one second grade students were the subjects. Two forms of Level B of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test were used. All subjects were tested in a traditional environment with no movement allowed. The same …

Keyboarding: Computer-Assisted Method Of Instruction Versus The Traditional Method Of Instruction, David D. Collins Jan 1985

Keyboarding: Computer-Assisted Method Of Instruction Versus The Traditional Method Of Instruction, David D. Collins

Masters Theses

This study was conducted to determine if seventh and eighth grade students could develop keyboarding on the microcomputer using the computer-assisted method of instruction with minimal teacher interaction as effectively as students on electric typewriters using the traditional method of instruction. Specifically, an effort was made to determine the following difference between the computer-assisted method of instruction group and the traditional method of instruction group: gross words typed on straight-copy timed writings per minute, number of errors made on straight-copy timed writings, and technique on straight-copy. The data were made up of gross word per minute and accuracy scores on …
