It was the purpose of this study (1) to classify causes of reported teacher absences; (2) to compare frequency of absences in men and women teachers; (3) to determine months of the year and days of the week showing the greatest number of teacher absences; (4) to compare absence patterns in married and unmarried teachers; (5) to determine age groups of teachers having the greatest frequency of absences; and (6) to determine whether extended sick leave provisions and duty-free noon hours have had any substantial effect on teacher absence patterns.

This study was initiated as a result of a need that became apparent in two industrial arts seminars at Central Washington State College. Studies reveal that industrial arts teachers use principles, laws, and applications of mathematics and science daily, but these are seldom recognized and made meaningful to the students. A request was made by the principal of John Marshall High School to the guidance staff that experimentation be done in the area of group counseling. The writer, who had previously served on the guidance staff and subsequently as a teacher, agreed to coordinate the experiment. In addition to the coordinator, two teachers and two counselors assisted in the implementation and performance of the experiment.
