Since the end of World War I instrumental music has become an important and accepted part of the secondary school curriculum (17, pp. 56-59). According to a recent report published by the American Music Conference, Chicago, Illinois (19, p. 3), there were in 1963 eleven million students studying music in the schools of America.

There have been numerous studies conducted to determine the purpose and objectives of instrumental music. It was the writer's purpose to determine the reason students discontinued seminary before obtaining a fourth-year certificate from the Burley L. D. S. Seminary between the years 1961-1965. In addition to this, means of helping to solve the problems of the students who discontinued seminary were sought. Questionnaires were sent to 92 students who had discontinued seminary; a questionnaire was also given to 61 students who were still in seminary. The results of these questionnaires were tabulated by the Brigham Young University Data Processing Service.
