A Framework For Understanding Participation Among African American Adolescents In The Rochester Step-Off Program: A Foundation For Evidence-Based Strategies To Improve Participation, Roderick L. Jones

Education Doctoral

Out-of-school time programs (OST programs) are effective at improving social-emotional development and academic performance. Much of the literature on out-of school time programs supports the relationship between levels of impact and participation (Durlak & Weissberg, 2007; Lauer, Akiba, Wilkerson, Apthorp, Snow, & Martin-Glenn, 2006). Research suggests that low-income African Americans benefit from out-of school time programs. However, they are less likely to participate than their White and more affluent counterparts (Simpkins, 2003). This study sought to develop a framework for understanding participation among African American adolescents in the Rochester Step-Off Program (RSO) using the Communities That Care Youth Survey. The …

The purpose of this research was to study post-secondary faculty perceptions, motivations, and concerns from three local institutions of higher education regarding the phenomena that attracts or deters faculty from participating in service-learning pedagogy. This study concludes that more than one …

Do Current Teaching Practices On Multicultural Students With Autism Demonstrate Culturally Responsive Teaching?, Keith Mcgriff Nov 2008

Do Current Teaching Practices On Multicultural Students With Autism Demonstrate Culturally Responsive Teaching?, Keith Mcgriff

Education Doctoral

Autism is a disorder present from birth or very early in childhood that affects social interaction, communication of ideas and feelings, imagination, and relationships with others (National Research Council, 2001 ). Most of the research has categorized students with autism according to disability and failed to look at the importance of culture. Such limitations may reflect a lack of awareness of cultural issues and the ways that these issues affect students with autism and their families. Also, such missing information may compromise the quality of the fields of professionals who work with multicultural students (Obiakor, Wilder, and Dyches, 2004). Professionals …

A Study Of The Impact Of Data-Informed Instruction On The Reading Comprehension Of Tenth-Grade Students, Norma Vetter

Education Doctoral

Abstract Current literature on data-driven decision-making is centered on the use of summative data from state and district tests for informing decisions regarding teaching and learning. Although annual data have provided schools valid evidence for making decisions for school improvement plans and curriculum changes, they have proven to be less effective in making a direct impact on .the daily instructional decisions that teachers make for improving student achievement (Stiggins, 2000; Reeves, 2006). This study was an investigation on the effects that data-informed instrutction may have on the reading comprehension of tenth-grade students. The methodology was a quantitative design in which …

"I Just Decided To Do My Work:" An Investigation Into Factors Leading To Academic Improvement Among Multiple-Time Retained Seventh Grade Students, Deasure A. Matthew

Education Doctoral

The problem that this study examined was the academic improvement of two- and three-time retained seventh grade students in low-performing middle school after modifying the school's leadership team and academic program. This study examined the effects of grade retention, school climate, motivation, and teacher-student relationship on academic performance. Review of research findings suggest retention yields no benefit (Jimerson (2001), Holmes & Matthews (1984), and Jackson (1975). Despite research suggesting little benefit from retention, it remains a common practice among educators (Holmes & Matthews, 1984; Jackson, 1975; Jimerson, 2001). A qualitative case study design using document analysis and structured interviews was …
