All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A shortage of manpower during World War II and in the immediate years following the war forced the American farmer into an era of mechanized agriculture. His investment in machinery tripled. With this evolution in farming, additional training became necessary for the successful operation, care, and maintenance of his machinery. The farmer became, through no choice of his own, a mechanic. Many times the success or failure of his farming enterprizes was a direct result of how well he operated his costly farm machinery.

The evolution in farming methods presented a new challenge to the instructor in agriculture. Problems of …

We plead for a better, a more just, a more open and straightforward, a more public society, in which free and all-around communication and participation occurs as a matter of course in order that education may be bettered. We plead for an improved and enlarged education in order that there may be brought into existence a society all of whose operations shall be more genuinely educative, conducive to the development of desire, judgment and character. (1)

Participation is concerned with three groups; students, trained experts, and parents. None of these, in the eyes of Dewey or Kilpatrick and their school …

An Analysis Of Factors In Reading Achievement Scores Of The Third And Sixth Grades Of Garfield County, Harvey D. Moore

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem of reading continuity through primary and intermediate grades in Garfield County has been one of growing concern to our supervisors and administrators for some time. It has been felt that, because of the high correlation of good reading and success of other school subjects, all possible effort should be made in developing a reading program which would insure continuous progress. The slow child would then be assured of meeting only school work of which he would be capable of doing.

Learning to read is difficult. Reading may be considered as a tool, a technique which if mastered would …

This study is concerned with the teaching of biology in Utah secondary schools. As long as schools exist there will be need for studies concerning teaching methods, facilities, and equipment. Perhaps the following will serve to emphasize …

Although individual parent-teacher conferences had been used at the Whittier for many years, there had been no attempt to formalize the topics used in discussion, or to standardize the procedures. Through continued study, the instructors at the Whittier had gained an unusually good understanding of the several phases of child development. The conference has been …

A History Of The United States Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps, Raymond A. Stevens May 1955

A History Of The United States Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps, Raymond A. Stevens

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Tragic as it may seem, every generation of Americans, without exception, has had to go to war. Americans, as hopeful and idealistic about peace as any people in history, have been forced into war three times in four decades--twice in the last one. When a great nation must choose between war and survival, there really is no choice. It must fight.

In the past we have misconceived the choice between preparedness and unpreparedness as a choice between large standing armed forces and no defenses at all. Inevitably, a peaceful people have chosen no defenses. In peacetime we cannot possibly maintain …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Often expressed claims which amounted to a general belief among many of the administrators of the schools of Carbon County were the stimulus for this study. The claims generally expressed were that the Mexican-Indian students of the schools did not have as good ability, did not achieve as well, were poorer attenders, caused a larger amount of difficulty and delinquency and did not adjust to the school society as well proportionately as their co-students of other nationalities. It was stated that while many nationality groups were represented in the school population, that other groups were oriented, assimilated and amalgamated into …

As the graduates of colleges and universities receive their diplomas and leave their Alma Mater, a new and different challenge confronts them. Their problem now is not one of being free of the struggles of completing their education but rather the anticipation of what will be their success in the future. They feel that now they are qualified to take over new jobs and responsibilities for which they have been trained. Many will be successful in securing good positions in their respective fields (others may have to start at the bottom and gain their advancement through more learning while on …
