Educational Adjustment Of Ute Indians As Compared To The Mixed-Bloods, And Native Whites At Union High School Roosevelt, Utah, Darrell D. Atkinson

Union High School is located in Roosevelt, Utah, on the Uintah and Duchesne county line.

Students come to Union High School from an area of approximately 30 miles radius around Roosevelt. Included in this area is the Ouray and Uintah Indian reservation.

There are approximately 125 full-blood and mixed-blood Indians who should be attending Union High School. The greater majority of these students live on the reservation named above.

Since 1951, when the majority of the Ute Indian students were transferred from the Indian school, there has been a closer association of full-blood Indian, mixed-blood Indian, and white students. With …

A shortage of manpower during World War II and in the immediate years following the war forced the American farmer into an era of mechanized agriculture. His investment in machinery tripled. With this evolution in farming, additional training became necessary for the successful operation, care, and maintenance of his machinery. The farmer became, through no choice of his own, a mechanic. Many times the success or failure of his farming enterprizes was a direct result of how well he operated his costly farm machinery.

This study is an outgrowth of the cooperative efforts of the instructors at the Utah State Agricultural College Elementary Training School (Whittier). An attempt was made to show that the parent-teacher conference is one of the best possible means of reporting pupil progress and growth.

Although individual parent-teacher conferences had been used at the Whittier for many years, there had been no attempt to formalize the topics used in discussion, or to standardize the procedures. The Intermountain School started in January of 1950, being converted from vacated arm hospital to a boarding school for Navajo students. Funds for the support of the school are appropriated by Congress through the Department of Interior and the Indian Bureau. The school is exclusively for Navajo students, and it grew as fast as facilities were remodeled and new buildings were constructed, until capacity was reached. During the first school year, 1950, there were enrolled 503 students. This has increased each succeeding year until capacity was reached in 1954-55 when 2,311 students were enrolled.
