The Evolution Of Iowa's Intermediate Educational Unit And Its Influence On The Delivery Of Special Education: A Historical Perspective, Christopher Anthony Kleve

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Iowa has developed a unique regional intermediate education system known as Area Education Agencies (AEAs). The AEAs provide local school districts with special education programs and services, media services, and other education services. The AEAs have existed since July 1, 1975 after the passage of Senate File 1163 in 1974. The AEAs were not the first intermediate educational units in Iowa. In 1858 the state legislature created the office of the county superintendent to serve as intermediate link between the local schools and the office of the state superintendent. From the first decade of the 20th century, the role of …

Fundamental Concepts Required By Electromechanical Technology Graduates For Entry-Level Employment In Related Industry, Julio R. Garcia Jan 1988

Fundamental Concepts Required By Electromechanical Technology Graduates For Entry-Level Employment In Related Industry, Julio R. Garcia

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The objective of this study was to determine the fundamental electromechanical concepts needed by electromechanical technology graduates to perform efficiently at the entry-level employment in related industry. An extensive review of the literature indicated that it was necessary to prepare electromechanical technologists with emphasis given to the area of electrical/electronics technology, mechanical technology, fluids, and fiber optics. Thusly prepared, these graduates would be able to service modern industrial equipment and would have greater opportunities in the job market than at present.

A Likert format questionnaire was developed to gather the necessary data. The survey instrument consisted of 91 concept statements …

An Analysis Of Historical Studies Of Literacy Standards From Three Epochs In American Elementary Education, Karen Elizabeth Stinson Hanus Jan 1988

An Analysis Of Historical Studies Of Literacy Standards From Three Epochs In American Elementary Education, Karen Elizabeth Stinson Hanus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The task of determining the standards of literacy in an historical epoch, the accurate assessment of children's ability to read, and the achievement of universal literacy are like the impossible endeavor of Tantalus in Greek mythology. As one comes closer to achieving one's goal, it changes and moves further away, forever just out of reach. So it is in trying to ascertain absolutes in the field of literacy. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to demonstrate that one definition of literacy is not possible because literacy standards depend upon historical context.

Prominent selected historians' studies of literacy were examined …

Subjects were administered the PMA in the fall of 1972 and again in the spring of 1973 to determine if the additional months of schooling had produced achievement gains. In this study, only the fall pre-test scores were used. Of the 385 students in thirteen Iowa school districts who participated in the original study, 26 agreed to allow the use of their Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) scores in this follow-up study. These ITBS scores were correlated with PMA scores in grades 3, …
