Doctor of Education (EdD)

This qualitative research study explored participant perceptions of district-sponsored race-and equity-focused professional development, specifically as it applies to racial consciousness. This study utilizes Singleton’s (2006) Courageous Conversations About Race (CCAR) Protocol to examine participant perceptions of district race-and equity-focused professional development and its impact personally, professionally, and as members of an organization engaged in ongoing conversations about race and equity. Results showed that participants perceived a change in their racial consciousness as a result of participation in the district’s ongoing race-and equity-focused professional development. The study explored the results and its implications for education, specifically regarding participant perception of the …

The Impact Of Parenting Education And Resources On The Development Of The Fathering Role, Bruce S. Sheppard Nov 2014

The Impact Of Parenting Education And Resources On The Development Of The Fathering Role, Bruce S. Sheppard

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This qualitative study is an inquiry into how men perceive their roles as fathers, how they developed those roles, and the influence those roles have on the success of their children. Interviews were conducted by the author with fourteen men who had previously participated in a prenatal class for new, first-time fathers. The transcribed data from these interviews were triangulated with interview notes, case notes, and a study journal. The data were also reviewed for accuracy through post-transcription telephone interviews with three of the interviewees. Five important themes emerged through analysis of the interview data: a) the men saw themselves …

This exploratory study examines the impact of short-term study abroad programs on students at one small, religious, comprehensive university on the West Coast. In particular, four dimensions of influence are investigated: academic impact, personal impact, social impact, and spiritual impact. The primary objective of this investigation is to determine whether the short term study abroad programs at this institution provide substantive opportunities for student growth in these four dimensions. A secondary objective utilizes Astin’s Student Involvement Theory to discover the extent to which student engagement affects this student growth. The literature review examines the impact of study abroad experiences in …

An Exploration Of Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy, Stephanie Boni Aug 2014

An Exploration Of Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy, Stephanie Boni

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This qualitative study uses semi-structured interviews and participant reflective journals to explore the perceptions of pre-service teachers' self-efficacy and sense of readiness to enter the teaching profession. The six participants were graduate students in a Master of Arts in Teaching program from the same university. The study took place at the end of their year-long field placement as they were completing a three-week solo teaching experience. Consistent with current literature, the participants identified the most influential factor to self-efficacy to be the relationship and influence of their cooperating teacher. Other areas of influence were classroom management, student achievement data, and …

Parental Decisions For Virtual Education For Credit-Deficient High School Students, Todd B. Schweitzer Jul 2014

Parental Decisions For Virtual Education For Credit-Deficient High School Students, Todd B. Schweitzer

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This project performed a qualitative study using in-depth interviews to determine the reasons families enrolled their students in virtual education and to collect their reflections on their experience in virtual education after enrolling. I interviewed the parents or guardians of eight credit-deficient high school students at risk of not graduating who were enrolled in a virtual high school in Oregon. The interviews used 11 open-ended questions in order to answer the two research questions: 1. What are parental reasons for choosing online education for children who are at risk of not graduating from high school with their cohort due to …

Believe And Achieve: An Examination Of Predictors Of Mathematical Achievement In Secondary Mathematics Students, Malia L. Hite Jul 2014

Believe And Achieve: An Examination Of Predictors Of Mathematical Achievement In Secondary Mathematics Students, Malia L. Hite

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This research addressed the following research question: which specific variable has the greatest predictive power of mathematical literacy and problem solving competency while controlling for socioeconomic status (SES)? The variables that were studied were categorized as follows: demographic and personal history variables, attitudinal variables, behavioral variables, and school organization and structure variables. Much of the existing literature cites SES as the most powerful predictor of math achievement. Using multiple linear regression modeling, this study found that many variables studied were determined to be significant predictors of mathematical literacy and/or problem solving competency while controlling for SES. Every category of variables …

The Journey From Tragedy To Hope: The Experience Of Christian Undergraduates, David M. Johnstone May 2014

The Journey From Tragedy To Hope: The Experience Of Christian Undergraduates, David M. Johnstone

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Using the case study approach, I interviewed seven student leaders at an evangelical university in the Pacific Northwest. Their common feature, other than attending the same institution, was that they had all experienced tragic or traumatic situations at some point in their lives. In spite of this experience, they were able to display a hopeful outlook on life. The purpose of this study was to discern elements or themes that were common to their stories. I was particularly looking for themes that might explain what helped them move on from their traumatic experiences into a perspective of hope. I anticipated …

Revolutionary Education: A Modern Synthesis Of John Dewey's Evolutionary Philosophy And Educational Theory, W. Jason Niedermeyer May 2014

Revolutionary Education: A Modern Synthesis Of John Dewey's Evolutionary Philosophy And Educational Theory, W. Jason Niedermeyer

Doctor of Education (EdD)

John Dewey was one of the first philosophers who intentionally used the principles of evolution to produce his perspective. He was also the foremost educational theorist of a generation. In both fields, he was a pragmatist, and he sought to lay waste to the dualisms that prevented progress. It is therefore ironic that he erected an artificial wall between the evolutionary thought that pervaded his writings on philosophy, psychology, and even art, and his works on education. I argue in this dissertation that the true power of Dewey would come through the synthesis of his evolutionary and educational thoughts. Using …

Toward An Integrative Theory Of Vocation And Volition: Locating The Historical Concept Of Christian Calling In The Contemporary Psychological Treatment Of Motivation, Timothy S. Walker

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this research is to identify similarities between the Christian concept of calling and educational psychology's theories on motivation. This study includes a review of historical and contemporary literature concerning calling alongside a review of literature pertaining to Self-Determination Theory. I use these reviews first to understand how Christians have historically understood and applied the concept of calling as motivation. Secondly, they are used to determine if Self Determination Theory relates to the Christian concept of calling. And, thirdly, they are used to discover areas in which Self-Determination Theory offers insight into the Christian concept of calling's potential …

One Pre-Service Program's Dispositional Efforts Revealed, Michelle C. Hughes Apr 2014

One Pre-Service Program's Dispositional Efforts Revealed, Michelle C. Hughes

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This case study examined the pre-service teacher’s dispositional development in one small, undergraduate preparation program. The author conducted personal interviews with four former students and two faculty members, and analyzed and triangulated the data with archived artifacts. The study revealed four distinct expressions for dispositional development in the pre-service program: an early and sustained focus on dispositions, modeling by faculty, as well as embedded coursework and multiple practice contexts, with particular emphasis on clinical experience contexts. The four expressions functioned in tandem to foster dispositional development in the pre-service teacher. The research revealed that because the dispositional focus was embedded …

Investigating The Use Of Mobile Technology For Classroom Instruction: A Case Study Of Two K-12 Christian Schools, Matt Gehrett

Doctor of Education (EdD)

How useful is the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model in analyzing and explaining teacher effectiveness in the use of technological tools for teaching and learning? One way a researcher can answer this question is to apply the TPACK model to specific cases such as the Christian school environment. As a result, the purpose of this case study was to explore the connections between the use of mobile computing technology, system wide factors that promote successful implementation, and a teacher's technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) on classroom instruction in two K-12 Christian schools in the Central Valley of California. Specifically, …

Student Perceptions Of Motivation And Their Impact On Effort And Performance: A Grounded Theory Study Of Affect And Achievement Motivation, Marc Simmons

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Motivation research is plentiful but applications of motivation in the academic environment remain sparse. This study examined student perceptions of motivation in relation to their effort and academic achievement. This research centered upon four research questions: 1) To what extent do student perceptions confirm extant motivation literature? 2) How do student perceptions of interest, effort, motivation, and achievement relate to one another? 3) How do affective states relate to students’ perceptions of effort and performance? 4) To what degree can students self-identify motivating or demotivating factors? Several findings emerged from this study. The most surprising was the connection between motivation …
