Do Pop Quizzes Have A Positive Effect On Exam Grades?, Victoria V. Frisch

A quasi-experimental study was conducted over a seven week period between two sections of a level two American Sign Language class to determine if pop quizzes better prepared students for their midterm exams than announced quizzes would. Data collected were four quiz scores and midterm grades. Analysis conducted consisted of calculating the mean of each assessment, and running a series of t tests to compare mean scores between the control group receiving pop quizzes, and the experimental group receiving announced quizzes. The analysis showed no significance between the two groups.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was created to fill that need. This study presents the historical development of the Natio1ial Board Teacher Certification program, research on its effects on student learning, and the personal certification experience of a teacher practitioner. The use of standards, active involvement, and self-reflection in evaluation were studied. With a focus on professional growth and accountability, The Frameworks for Teaching by Charlotte Danielson (1996) were created. The literature showed that the Frameworks for Teaching provided a clear explanation of teacher performance and supplied accountability to parents and legislators when used for summative evaluation. To systemically support Danielson's Frameworks, Danielson and McGreal (2000) collaborated to create Teacher Evaluation to Enhance Professional Practice. The purpose of this project was to design an assessment portfolio process for first grade students. Through the portfolio process children will set goals, self-evaluate, self-reflect, review their peers, and hold a student-led conference. Current research and best practices on portfolios, goal-setting, self-evaluation, self-reflection, peer review, and student-led conferences were reviewed. Literacy portfolios were defined. Portfolios and how they were introduced into education were discussed. Purposes and benefits as well as concerns and challenges of using portfolios in the classroom were discussed and compared. Mini-lessons and black-line masters were also included for each content area.

The relationship between young drivers' driving habits and the time of day in which they received their Behind-The-Wheel instruction was studied. Three hundred and ninety-five junior and senior level high school students were surveyed on their personal driving histories. The results showed differences between those students that received instruction after regular school hours and those that received instruction before or during school hours. Implications for Traffic Safety Education are discussed.

The purpose of this project was to determine parent perceptions of the value of the Juanita Apartment School program. To accomplish this task interview questions were developed and family interviews conducted. Transcriptions of audio interview tapes were made and all data studied to determine response patterns. Families interviewed indicated the Juanita Apartment School program had either been "very helpful" or "helpful" in making their children feel more positive about and be more successful in elementary school.

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of dynamic assessment within a regular classroom instructional setting, by a classroom teacher. The results showed that while dynamic assessment was an effective way of assessing and intervening with students and revealed relevant information about the effects of teacher expectations on student efforts, its potential value for the classroom teacher relied on the assessors knowledge of, and familiarity with the specific cognitive deficits being exhibited by the students. Implications for classroom use of dynamic assessment are discussed.

An assessment, in the form of an interview, was conducted to measure the effects of resource room placement and full-time classroom integration on special education student self-esteem. Sixty students in the Wenatchee School District participated in the project during the 1990-1991 school year. The results of the project indicated that the placement of special education students in a full-time integration program does not insure a greater enhancement of their total self-concept; although it may be of benefit to certain areas in their self-esteem. The project included conclusions and recommendations.

This study compared the cloze procedure and informal reading inventory at reading levels ranging from third through seventh grade. Twenty-four elementary students, judged by their teachers as not having reading difficulties, were selected from fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classes and. administered the two test instruments. The correlations, at each reading level were not significant at the .01 level as determined by the Pearson Product-Moment formula. Recommendations included the use of more subjects and suggestions for additional research.
