College readiness in the United States is a multifaceted and complex concept, with many contributing factors that often overlap, and many students leave high school and enter college lacking the skills or knowledge necessary to succeed in higher education. This study investigates a set of study skills and self-management skills related to college readiness. I label this set Beyond-the-Classroom Learning Skills (BCLS). I investigate these skills as they relate to factors of cultural capital both in the home and at school. This study is undertaken to reveal the answers to some of the many problems confronting educators in both secondary schools and colleges. Two classes entering Richmond College have been selected for a detailed analysis of their members over a two year period. The Freshman Class entering in the session 1938-1939 was selected to represent the pre-war period for it was felt that their first two years were completed before the pressure of the war could distort the academic picture.
