An Empirical Study Of The Equipercentile Assumption As A No-Treatment Expectation In Title I Evaluations, Alan C. Nowakowski
An Empirical Study Of The Equipercentile Assumption As A No-Treatment Expectation In Title I Evaluations, Alan C. Nowakowski
Dissertations
The focus of this study was the tenability of the underlying assumption of Model A, the norm-referenced model, of the Title I Evaluation and Reporting System (TIERS). Model A estimates the no-treatment expectation from normative data. The assumption made by the Model is that, in the absence of special treatment, student groups maintain a constant percentile position in relation to national norms.
The study examined the extent to which student groups maintain a constant percentile position over a six month period. The study used a sizable representative student subsample of the standardization group for the 1978 Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT). …

Washington Special Education Funding Formula, Sharon L. Jenft
Washington Special Education Funding Formula, Sharon L. Jenft
Master of Education Graduate Projects
Financial implications of the current Washington Special Education Funding Formula for the 1980-81 school year were studied. Financial data for 229 school districts which provided education for handicapped children was collected for the study. The results showed that the majority of school districts which provide education for handicapped children did not receive funding equal to expenditures for education programs for the 1980-81 school year. Recommendations for increasing Washington's funding for handicapped education programs are discussed.
A Confusion Matrix Intelligibility Testing Procedure For Preschool Children, Jane C. Coe-Kruse
A Confusion Matrix Intelligibility Testing Procedure For Preschool Children, Jane C. Coe-Kruse
Masters Theses
This study was conducted to develop and examine a procedure for testing and analyzing the speech intelligibility of preschool children through the use of a phonetically balanced pictured word list, confusion matrices, and computer analysis. Four subjects and 15 listeners were used to obtain data on perception of sound production. The results indicate that use of this procedure differentiates varying speech intelligibilities and allows for effective analysis of sound production parameters as they pertain to speech intelligibility.

[Improving Instruction In Reading Comprehension Utilizing Basal Readers], Patsy Carol Cada
All Graduate Projects
The specific purposes of this project were to:
1. Analyze the instructional comprehension questions suggested by the Houghton Mifflin teachers' manual for the basal reading series grades 1, 2, and 3. This included oral questions used to guide silent reading and post-story discussion questions.
2. Develop additional instructional resources to correlate with the Houghton Mifflin basal reading series grades 1, 2, and 3. Specifically created were alternative questioning strategies to aid early readers in the development of a process for comprehending written passages as they are reading.
These resources will be submitted for use in the author's local school district.
Study To Determine The Effect Of Graduation Requirement Changes On Student Performance, Attitudes, And Retention In School, David R. Betzing
Study To Determine The Effect Of Graduation Requirement Changes On Student Performance, Attitudes, And Retention In School, David R. Betzing
All Graduate Projects
On July 31, 1979, the Yakima School Board of School District 7, Yakima, Washington, approved a graduation policy change increasing the total number of credits required from forty-eight to sixty-six. This change required that eighteen credits be transferred from grade nine of the junior high school setting. This study attempts to assess the impact of the change upon the performance and attitudes of ninth grade students. Indications are that students accepted the changes positively, felt they were working harder, and, in two schools showed a decrease in the failure rate. A look at the general achievement level of students and …
Application Of Piaget’S Theory Of Cognitive Growth To The Development Of An Interview Protocol And Validation Of A Task To Assess Reasoning Abilities Of College Students, Bruce Edward Perry
Application Of Piaget’S Theory Of Cognitive Growth To The Development Of An Interview Protocol And Validation Of A Task To Assess Reasoning Abilities Of College Students, Bruce Edward Perry
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The developmental theory of Jean Piaget provides a paradigm for evaluation of the reasoning abilities of an individual. The overall aim of Piaget's work was to delineate the sequence of the development of intelligence, particularly the ability of a subject to interact successfully with complex problems or to deal with simple problems in more efficient ways. To this end, this study investigated the validation of a new interview task as an instrument for assessing the formal reasoning abilities of college students. The new task, patterned after a game called MasterMind, requires the subject to deduce the color and location of …

Attitude And Opinion Profile Of The High School Vocational Student Versus The Academic Student, Bernard Austin Belstad

A Personal Guideline For The Use Of Correction In The Classroom, Carol Ann Wilson
A Personal Guideline For The Use Of Correction In The Classroom, Carol Ann Wilson
MA TESOL Collection
Correction is an important aspect of teaching, one that ESL teachers face daily. At issue is the ability to match the teacher's goals or priorities with what is supposed to be taught or learned, and the specific teaching-learning environment.
The study presents my original definition of correction, the beginning reference point for this work, which is eventually compared to a new definition of correction. The evolution of the new definition is based upon documentation and analysis of five case studies and the systematic generation and development of a model for correction use.
The model is adaptable for use by any …

Esl/Efl Homework: Philosophical Considerations And Their Application In Esl/Efl Homework Design, David Anderson Plumb
MA TESOL Collection
This paper examines ESL/EFL homework and homework design first through the exploration of two distinct approaches to homework and homework design and second through the presentation an explanation of the conclusions I reached regarding homework and homework design.

Prediction Of Junior Required English Grades Using Expectancy Tables At Central High School, Clifton, Illinois, Richard Lee Longfellow
Masters Theses
Problem:
At Central High School in Clifton, Illinois, students are required to take one of three Junior English classes in order to graduate. These classes are: American Fiction, American Literature Survey, and Modern American Literature. Many times, students would ask their counselor "What are my chances of passing the three different Required Junior English classes?". The counselors would only be able to give a personal opinion that was based on Sophomore English grades and not a substantiated answer.
The problem had two parts. The first part was to determine if a relationship existed between Sophomore English grades and Junior Required …

The Correlation Of Ses And Children’S Performance On The Wisc-R And R-Cpm, Anne Carolyn Robb
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study investigated the relationship between the WISC-R and the R-CPM for a sample of 44 fourth grade males classified according to SES. The questions asked were: 1) Does the R-CPM correlate most highly with the Block Design and Object Assembly subtests of the WISC-R; and, 2) what, if any, effect has SES on children's performance on these two instruments? Results indicate a moderate (.52) correlation between the R-CPM and the Performance Scale of the WISC-R. Within that scale, the R-CPM correlated most highly with the Picture Completion, Block Design and Object Assembly subtests. A moderate correlation (.56) was also …

Mt. Zion School District Gifted Elementary Reading/Language Arts Program, William D. Fancher
Masters Theses
Differentiated curricula for gifted and talented students are necessities for any school district which purports to serve the educational needs of all of its student population. During the 1980-81 school year, the Mt. Zion School District, Mt. Zion, Illinois, conducted a thorough investigation and began a total revision of its district-wide gifted program. Using a systems analysis approach to problem solving, a selected committee of administrators and professional staff conducted a needs assessment in order to determine the actual value of its existing program. Concluding that the existing program did not meet the needs of its gifted/talented youth, several alternatives …
