Perspectives Of High School Orchestra Teachers In Urban And Suburban Settings In Using Social-Emotional Learning Techniques, Dale A. Kokot May 2024

Perspectives Of High School Orchestra Teachers In Urban And Suburban Settings In Using Social-Emotional Learning Techniques, Dale A. Kokot

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A need exists for more literature concerning high school orchestras in an urban setting versus a suburban neighborhood and the different styles of social-emotional learning strategies implemented in each. Universities and other professional development specialists now teach teachers social-emotional learning procedures and processes. However, these specialists often must provide orchestra directors with more specific skills. There also should be more differentiated instruction for high school orchestras in an urban setting versus what school corporations require of teachers in a suburban-specific area. Teachers must identify the demographics of where and to whom they teach and tailor lesson plans and social-emotional techniques …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The concept of comprehensive musicianship has been discussed since the mid-sixties referring to the interdisciplinary study of music. Many directors focus solely on teaching performing skills such as rhythm and musical notation, limiting the student’s exposure to a well-rounded musical teaching experience. Comprehensive musicianship has shown an increase in student’s musical knowledge in history and enhanced musical theory skills, aural skills, performance skills and improvisation. Although there is significant research on high school bands and their implementation of comprehensive musicianship, there is limited research pertaining to the Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) and the middle school band. Can Close Reading Improve Skills And A Desire To Read? (Action Research Proposal), Whitney Moon

Graduate Research Showcase

I have no idea what this paper is talking about, what does this word mean, do we have to read all of it?” I hear these phrases and questions repeatedly in my eighth-grade classroom from students that not only struggle reading but also to dig deeper and pull out the meaning of specific passages given to them. This school year I realized that students are being required to read less (for numerous reasons this action research will not cover) and when they are expected to complete a reading assignment; there is pushback, apathy and a lack of desire to …

A Multi-Case Study Examining The Practices Of Fourth-And Fifth-Grade Teachers In Title 1 Schools Who Use Specific Reading Strategies To Teach The Comprehension Of Informational Text, Candice Maureen Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this multi-case study was to examine the practices of fourth- and fifth-grade teachers in Title 1 schools who use specific reading strategies to teach the comprehension of informational text. One theory that guided this study was Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory focusing on the zone of proximal development as it applies to what a learner can do with and without help, and his concept of learning and development, whereby a child does not develop independently of his or her environment. In addition, Bandura’s social cognitive theory served as a guiding theory for this study. The design was a multiple …

Stepping Down? Theorizing The Process Of Returning To The Faculty After Senior Academic Leadership, Lisa Jasinski

Academic Affairs

While scholars have devoted considerable attention to identifying and developing future academic leaders, scant empirical research has considered the firsthand experiences of senior leaders who returned to the faculty. This grounded theory study developed a theoretical understanding of the process of returning to the faculty after serving as a senior campus administrator. This research examined a common academic rite of passage using the analysis of interviews with 43 former college presidents, provosts, deans, and “other senior leaders” from a variety of postsecondary institutions. Academic leaders in the study characterized the process of returning to the faculty as mostly positive and …

Strategies To Mentor Teacher Candidates During Caltpa To Use Research-Based Practices To Facilitate Engagement And Learning For English Language Learners., Lasisi Ajayi

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

Developing the knowledge and skills to teach K-12 English language learners (ELLs) is a crucial aspect of the teacher candidate learning to teach. This is even more critical as school districts are increasingly enrolling English language learners into the mainstream classrooms. Hence, teacher candidates must become proficient in implementing appropriate research-based strategies that promote learning for K-12 students with disabilities.

The California Teacher Performance Assessment, CalTPA, requires teacher candidates to teach one student ELL and upload the video of the instruction for assessment. This aspect of this CalTPA presents some challenges to our students because they have not worked with …

Holistic Approach To Academic Support At Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy, Amy Keck, Diane Hinterlong

Publications & Research

Academic support is critical to the success of students, and gifted students are no exception. The support they need is as unique as the students themselves. The difficulty of the material challenges some students, some struggle with time management, others struggle with breaking tasks into smaller chunks and other executive functions. The challenges become even more significant in a residential environment where students need to adjust to living and learning independently while also developing new social groups. Parents may also need assistance in helping students transition into this new, more independent role. Presenters will share application-based ideas from real-time programs, …

Of Writing, Teaching, And Tutoring: Banishing The Presence Of The Inner Critic In The Writing Center, Andrew Romriell

Writing Center Analysis Papers

The inner critic is the internal voice inside all of us that impedes us with negative messages about ourselves and our own capabilities (Elliot 111). In this essay, I illustrate the impact an inner critic can have in Writing Centers for both students and tutors alike and structure strategies to silence that critic. Three specific strategies are provided: (1) to name the inner critic in order to grant control over it, (2) to practice freewriting and understanding poor first drafts, and (3) to assist the student in understanding the allowance for imperfection within writing. By implementing these strategies alongside awareness …
