Mycotoxins are chemicals produced by fungi (molds) under certain conditions. They are not essential for fungal growth or reproduction, and are toxic to animals or humans. They are naturally present in feed and cannot always be avoided.
The purposes of this NebGuide are to provide information about sampling feeds to detect the presence of mycotoxins in them and about how feeds may be analyzed for mycotoxins.

In July 1996, the USDA published the Final Rule on Pathogen Reduction for meat and poultry processing facilities. Its goal is to reduce the occurrence of food-borne pathogens in meat and poultry products. The rule requires carcass sampling for "generic" E. coli in meat and poultry slaughter operations. The USDA has developed guidelines for acceptable, marginal and unacceptable amounts of E. coli to be used by the processor to determine if their process is controlling microbial hazards. Dates for initiating alfalfa weevil scouting are provided, based on 30 years of climatic data used to estimate appropriate degree day accumulations for northern and southern Nebraska. Sampling activities for alfalfa weevil need to be timed properly because it is inefficient to sample when the pest is not active or present. Conversely, delayed sampling is financially risky because economic damage can occur before a management practice is implemented. Integrated pest management programs often use degree day accumulations to initiate activities, while producers often use calendar dates. Calendar scheduling is traditionally based on subjective experience rather than research.
