Probability And Statistics [7th Grade], Courtney Spickelmier
Probability And Statistics [7th Grade], Courtney Spickelmier
Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
In this 7th grade unit, students will be required to put their mathematical minds to work as they develop an understanding of both theoretical and experimental probabilities and as they learn to analyze and communicate data effectively. Students will use real life data to explore measures of central tendency and how different measures may lead to different conclusions about the same information. Through the performance assessment, students will collect and analyze data, choosing the best way to communicate their findings. Finally, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge of theoretical probability to make predictions and will test those …
Ratios And Proportions [6th Grade], Lisa Murphy
Ratios And Proportions [6th Grade], Lisa Murphy
Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
In this unit students will be introduced to ratios and proportions. Students will have practice identifying ratios from pictures, graphs, models and word problems. Using these skills, students will then be able to identify proportional ratios and use ratios to describe proportional situations as well as to predict outcomes. To demonstrate their knowledge of ratios and proportional reasoning, students will complete a project assessment. The students will be given a recipe and then have to calculate the amounts of ingredients needed for various numbers of servings. The students will write down new versions of the recipes to be included in …

Publications & Research
In her keynote address at the 2008 NCSSSMST Professional Conference, Dr. Stephanie Pace Marshall addresses what work can be done with the collective resources of its Consortium members which beg to be shared and connected--and also explores what the source of "...our Blessed Unrest that will give us the courage to become unreasonable advocates for our children and for STEM transformation?"

Composition And Analysis Of Music Using Mathematica, Marianella P. Machado, Christopher W. Kulp, Dirk Schlingman
Composition And Analysis Of Music Using Mathematica, Marianella P. Machado, Christopher W. Kulp, Dirk Schlingman
Languages, Cultures, and Humanities Faculty and Staff Research
In this paper we demonstrate how to create and analyze musical compositions using Mathematica. In §1, we begin by demonstrating how to create a musical composition for an orchestra based on the butterfly curve using traditional means. In §2, we then show how a computer generated piece based on any curve can be composed using Mathematica. Finally, in §3, we show how Mathematica can be used to analyze musical compositions using the methods from nonlinear time series analysis.

I'd like to learn "Mathematica." "Mathematica" is probably the most~ powerful mathematics software available. It was developed and continues to be upgraded at Wolfram Research in Champaign. The U. of I. as well as many colleges and universities across the nation teach some sections of their calculus courses with "Mathematica." Also, several of the high schools in our district have students enrolled in "Calculus with Mathematica" through a distance learning program at the U. of I.

McMillan Magnet Center is located in urban Omaha, Nebraska, and specializes in math, computers, and communications. Once a junior high school, it was converted to a magnet center for seventh and eighth graders in the 1983-84 school year as part of Omaha's voluntary desegregation plan. Now 'the ethnic makeup of the student population is about 50% black and 50% white, with a few other minorities. This document seeks to archive McMillan's success in its mission to become a technology magnet school, including nationally recognized achievements in ~ethnology integration and Internet connectivity. McMillan's technological leadership came about thanks in large part …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of A Readjustment Of The Math Placement Test Cutoff Scores, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Jacqueline M. Andrieu-Parker, Joseph E. Trimble
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Introduction In May, 1991, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing (OIAT) published a report that summarized analyses conducted to explore the relationship of the three levels of the Math Placement Test (MPT)--Basic Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Pre-Calculus-¬ with mathematics course selection and final mathematics course grade. Based on the MPT score, the probability of receiving a passing grade (C- or better) was computed for the majority of mathematics courses that a student may enroll in immediately after taking the MPT. Partly as a result of that report, in the fall, 1991, cut-off scores for admittance to certain mathematics courses …

Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Introduction The sample of students whose records were analyzed in the Math Placement Test study published by the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing earlier this month contained very few students who had taken the Basic Algebra level of the placement test. Therefore, another sample of students was drawn to in order to investigate the relationship of Basic Algebra Test scores to final mathematics course grade and to predict the probability a student has of passing (receiving a grade of c- or better) Math 102 or Math 151 depending upon the score he or she earned on the Basic Algebra …
