Managers Effectively Using Influencing Skills To Gain The Support Of Stakeholders For Achieving Results, Cliff Karnes, David Bartz

A major expectation for managers is to accomplish results for their work unit that supports the vision and mission of the organization. Because managers are dependent on the efforts and productivity of the stakeholders with whom they work to achieve these results, they need effective influencing skills to use with those stakeholders. Effective application of the influencing principles of reciprocity, commitment, social proof, authority, liking, scarcity, and unity will greatly enhance managers’ influence with stakeholders to take the actions necessary to achieve the work unit’s needed results.

Weeds cost the NSW economy over $1.8 million each year through weed control costs, productivity losses, expenditure by public agencies and value lost due to price responses in agricultural markets (NRC, 2014). Good weed hygiene supports weed control efforts and can prevent weed spread. The importance of weed hygiene is reflected in the plethora of policies and guidelines on weed hygiene practices that exist for different sectors. Despite the presence of numerous weed hygiene guidelines, the 2013 National Landcare Survey (de Hayr, 2013) indicated that very few resources were being expended on weed hygiene; only 11% of agricultural businesses surveyed …

This was an exploratory study to understand the lived experience of those involved in mentoring relationships within a formal mentoring program in a corporate context. The researcher looked for rich detail about the nature of the relationship from the perspective of the mentor and mentee. To achieve a holistic perspective, the experience of organizational managers was deliberately included in the research. Exploration of this triadic relationship of mentor, mentee, and organizational manager has been neglected in the empirical literature. This research aimed to explore the appropriateness of on-line training delivery methods for small business owner/managers.

It is widely recognised that training and education are effective ways to reduce small business failure. In Australia, small business accounts for 96 percent of Australian private sector, non-agricultural businesses and they employ 47 percent of the private sector, non-agricultural workforce. Not surprisingly then, encouraging the development of the skills of the workforce has emerged as a major priority for government policy. However, what is also recognised is that many small business owner/managers (SBOs) have limited e-competencies.
