Fors 411: Forensic Comparative Analysis – A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Benchmark Portfolio, Larry Barksdale
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
This benchmark portfolio presents my work in reworking the goals, objectives, course design, teaching methods, student assessments, and learning outcome assessments of the undergraduate Univeristy of Nebraska-Lincoln core course FORS 411: Forensic Comparative Analysis. It reflects my application of the backward design concept of thinking about and identifying the desired outcomes of the course, what the students need to learn, and designing instruction and evaluations to directly address the outcomes [3]. My goal for the course is to embed in the intellectual framework of students an analytical orientation for understanding use of pattern evidence as viable information for the valid …

Family Portraits: Past And Present Representations Of Parents In Special Education Text Books, Dianne L. Ferguson, Philip M. Ferguson, Joanne Kim, Corrine Li
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This paper analyses the descriptions of families of children with disabilities as contained in introductory special education texts over the last 50 years. These text books are typically used in pre-service teacher education courses as surveys of the education of ‘exceptional children’. The textbooks reflect the mainstream professional assumptions of the era about topics such as disability, special education, inclusion, and family/school linkages. However, they also shape the assumptions of the next generation of educators about these same topics. The paper summarises the results of a qualitative document analysis of a sample of these textbooks from two different eras. The …
The Effectiveness Of Active And Traditional Teaching Techniques In The Orthopedic Assessment Laboratory, Sara Nottingham
The Effectiveness Of Active And Traditional Teaching Techniques In The Orthopedic Assessment Laboratory, Sara Nottingham
Athletic Training Faculty Articles and Research
Active learning is a teaching methodology with a focus on student-centered learning that engages students in the educational process. This study implemented active learning techniques in an orthopedic assessment laboratory, and the effects of these teaching techniques. Mean scores from written exams, practical exams, and final course evaluations were compared for 79 human physiology students. One- and two-way analyses of variance were used to evaluate the effect of teaching methodology on test scores and evaluation responses. No significant differences were found for course evaluation responses and written and practical exam scores between the two learning groups. This study suggests that …

A Teaching Intervention To Increase Achievement Of Hispanic Nonscience Majors Taking Physical Science Courses, G. Herold Poelzer, Liang Zeng
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
This quasi-experimental pilot study of nonscience majors taking a physical science course at a university in South Texas was conducted on Hispanic undergraduate students, and is theory based--an application of attribution theory. That the treatment group outperformed the comparison group provides evidence of the positive effect of having students reflect on controllable reasons for their grades and on their subsequent planning of strategies to maintain or improve those grades. Strongly And Weakly Directed Approaches To Teaching Multiple Representation Use In Physics, Patrick B. Kohl, David Rosengrant, Noah D. Finkelstein
Faculty Articles
Good use of multiple representations is considered key to learning physics, and so there is considerable motivation both to learn how students use multiple representations when solving problems and to learn how best to teach problem solving using multiple representations. In this study of two large-lecture algebra-based physics courses at the University of Colorado (CU) and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, we address both issues. Students in each of the two courses solved five common electrostatics problems of varying difficulty, and we examine their solutions to clarify the relationship between multiple representation use and performance on problems involving …

Standards, Firewalls, And General Classroom Mayhem: Implementing Student-Centered Technology Projects In The Elementary Classroom, Mark J. Hofer, Kathleen Owings Swan
Articles
Educators are simultaneously bombarded with both calls to integrate technology in meaningful ways into their teaching and to promote more student-centered activities which combine both content learning and higher-order thinking. This is no small task given the range of student abilities and interests, the increasing emphasis on state standards and testing, and the persistent challenges regarding reliability and ubiquitous access to the necessary technologies in the classroom. In this study, the authors attempt to work towards a research-based model to connect student-centered technology pedagogy that teachers can effectively replicate in the classroom. They came to this project as educational technologists …

Technology And Teacher Preparation In Exemplary Institutions: 1994 To 2003, Mark J. Hofer
Articles
In a 1994 study commissioned by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, Mergendoller, Johnston, Rockman, & Willis (1994) examined four exemplary institutions to identify their approaches to integrating technology into teacher education. A decade later, the field would benefit from a comparison of current approaches of infusing technology into teacher education to the 1994 findings. This study examines the approaches of the first seven teacher education programs to receive the ISTE NETS Distinguished Achievement Award. Current approaches to the process are outlined, including the identification of the key factors impacting their implementation. A comparison of the 1994 and the present …

A quasi-experimental design was used to investigate changes in learning outcomes for students enrolled in large-lecture/break-out sections versus in self-contained sections of the basic communication course.More precisely, the study explores the relationship between communication apprehension, immediacy and learning outcomes for the two class formats. Results indicate that students' cognitive learning outcomes are slightly higher in the large-lecture/break-out sections versus self-contained sections. In addition, affective learning decreases for all students from the first day of class and slightly more for students in the large-lecture/break-out sections. However, when the teacher is perceived as highly immediate, there is no difference in formats. (Contains 5 …
