This report is in response to the President’s Charge to the Task Force on African American/African/Black Student Success at Portland State University. As included in the charge, the report assesses the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for PSU in continuing to serve the African American/African/Black community at PSU. In the fall of 2009, Portland State University President Wim Wiewel commissioned a Task Force, and an associated Advisory Board composed of community stakeholders, to make strategic recommendations concerning how Portland State can best serve the higher education needs and aspirations of Oregon’s Latino community. President Wiewel further charged the Task Force to base its recommendations on the best research and evidence available and to consider the most effective investment of PSU resources.

From Expectations To Experiences: Using A Structural Typology To Understand First-Year Student Outcomes In Academically Based Living-Learning Communities, Matthew R. Wawrzynski, Jody Jessup-Anger

This longitudinal study investigated to what extent noncognitive variables (e.g., expectations for college) and the college environment (i.e., academically based living-learning communities) influence students' college experience. This research goes beyond grouping all living-learning students into one category, which has dominated much of the literature, by using an empirically derived structural typology for living-learning communities (Inkelas, Longerbeam, Leonard, & Soldner, 2005). Results suggest that being a student in a collaborative living-learning community is more likely to predict greater peer academic interactions and an enriching educational environment. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

I have always maintained that at-risk students were often blamed for their lack of success, rather than supported to overcome their prior educational challenges. As a second year residence hall director I had the privilege of working in a building with two distant wings. With the support of my mentor, Dr. Eugene J. Cech, Director of Testing, we developed a residence life program designed to assist summer lower-quarter high school graduates to be successful in college. The quality of residence life does make a difference. The journal, College Student Survey, no longer appears to be published.
