A Causal-Comparative Study Of The Flipped Classroom: A Blended Learning Approach To Improving Phonemic Awareness For Kindergarten English Language Learners, Karen Wilson Twitty

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of using the flipped classroom model of instruction to increase English language learners’ phonemic awareness compared to English language learners who received instruction using the business-as-usual approach. This quantitative perspective used a causal-comparative approach to measure achievement in developing phonemic awareness for students at risk due to lack of exposure to English language phonemes. The study involved 167 participants who underwent a pre-test to address any initial group differences. One group received flipped model instruction with curriculum-based video lessons, while the other received traditional in-class expository instruction without access to …

Improving Reading Comprehension And Vocabulary For English Language Learners, Rachael Vande Hoef

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Research on the education of English Language Learners (ELL) has shown that ELL students underperform native English speakers academically. Right from the start, students’ home language impacts school readiness amongst ELL students. Fortunately, implementing vocabulary and reading interventions is successful in closing learning gaps among ELL students. The implementation of a blended learning approach has been found to increase literary gains among ELL students. Given this research, a school improvement plan was developed to enhance the literary gains of ELL students. This multi-faceted plan involves teacher collaboration, parental engagement, vocabulary and reading interventions, as well as a blended learning approach.

Evaluating Preservice Teachers’ Performance In A Blended Field Experience Course During The Quarantine Of Covid-19, Laila Mohebi, Areej Elsayary

All Works

This paper aims to evaluate the preservice teachers’ teaching performance in a blended field experience during the quarantine of COVID-19. An exploratory sequential mixed method approach was adopted using Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis as a qualitative tool and quantitative data collected using a teacher evaluation rubric that merged the INTASC standards in the Danielson domains. The results show that using SWOT analysis positively impacts teachers’ performance: they understand how to use the external environment (seizing opportunities and avoiding threats) to control the internal environment (enhancing strengths and removing weaknesses).

Abstract

With the socio-educational challenges posed by COVID-19, teaching-learning is gradually moving from face-to-face to digital and online distance learning across the world. This makes it generally challenging to meet the needs of all learners in the context of inclusive education. Increasing evidence tends to show that for effective inclusive learning, the hybrid blended approaches to learning should be differentiated. Further still is the fact that school libraries need to be upgraded with resources that meet the needs of diverse learners, and speak to the present hybridization in pedagogy and learning. A major impairing problem is the documented lack of …
