In April 2018 we released Blue Sky Outcomes: Reaffirming Public Higher Education at Maine’s Flagship University, the report of our assessment of the Blue Sky Strategic Plan. I was honored to have led the UMaine community through this yearlong examination of what was accomplished, where we fell short, and how we changed as an institution over the five years during which the plan served as a guide. Leadership in student affairs continues to be a challenging enterprise for universities. Colleges are expected to help students succeed while providing for abundant needs through graduation. Chief student affairs officers have increasing demands of students and faculty amid decreased funds. This exploratory study took an in-depth look at the leadership perspectives of 19 chief student affairs officers at 4-year, public universities across the Midwest. The researcher sought responses on common leadership perspectives, challenges faced, and opportunities encountered. The three emerging themes were elements that inform leadership, knowledge and skills, and mindful leadership outlook. These emergent themes formed the basis for …

The 2014-15 academic year marked the first year since AY 1998-99 that research and graduate studies were administratively organized into one office. The reorganization brings synergy and focus to these two vital and strongly linked components of the University of Maine’s land grant mission. During FY 2015 a total of $51,134,092 were received from extramural sponsors and were comprised of 370 awards. These results closely mirror FY 2014 with 363 awards and $51,169,551 received. Our average proposal success rate from FY 2005 – FY 2015 was approximately 68%. The FY 2015 proposal success rate was 76%, up from 63% in …

The University of Maine System (UMS) Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Task Force makes the following slightly revised recommendations to the University of Maine System Credit Transfer Project Steering Committee and the University of Maine System Chief Academic Officers. The Recommendations and Next Steps below form a protocol that the UMS PLA Task Force recommends piloting for a period of four years, at which time the participating institutions will review their efficacy. The 2013–14 year was remarkably productive for UMaine’s faculty, with well over 1,000 journal articles, books and other scholarly works published. There were 571 proposals submitted and 363 grants awarded in fiscal year 2014, with over $43 million in total research awards, and over $95 million in total research expenditures. Teaching productivity was also significant, with over 255,000 student credit hours taught and 1,957 degrees granted.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program was suspended by the Chancellor of the University of Maine System on March 2, 2011. The suspension was based on a recommendation by the Academic Program Prioritization Working Group (APPWG) and a decision by the President of the University of Maine. The MPA program was housed in the Department of Public Administration. Following the suspension, no new students were admitted into the program. A plan was put in place to teach out required Public Administration classes and allow students who at the time were in the program to finish it, assuming normal progress …
