National Assessment Of Educational Progress (Naep) Results 2022, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Josh B. Mcgee Oct 2022

National Assessment Of Educational Progress (Naep) Results 2022, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Josh B. Mcgee

Policy Briefs

The National Center for Education Statistics has released this year’s NAEP results which measure nationwide student performance in 4th and 8th grade reading and math. NAEP is administered nationally to a representative sample of students from all 50 states, so acts as a standard measure of student performance across states and time. In this policy brief will examine Arkansas’ 2022 results and examine score gaps between student groups.

Preschool Number Of The Day, Christine Shepard Jul 2022

Preschool Number Of The Day, Christine Shepard

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This action research project was completed by a researcher was interested in the preschool math curriculum. More specifically, in the numbers and how their relationships including one to one counting and producing the amount when given a number in preschool. This researcher has taught preschool for 7 years. The students were able to participate in the study. One class of students did not receive the number of the day lessons, while the other students received the lessons throughout the entire school year. The study was part of our learning standards aligning to the Iowa Early Learning Standards and Gold Teaching …

Coding Protocol: A Meta-Analysis Of Early Numeracy Curriculum-Based Measurement, Gena Nelson May 2022

Coding Protocol: A Meta-Analysis Of Early Numeracy Curriculum-Based Measurement, Gena Nelson

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this document is to provide readers with the coding protocol that authors used to code 21 studies that met inclusion criteria for a meta-analysis. The focus of the meta-analysis was to determine the average correlations between four common early numeracy curriculum-based measure measurement (CBM) tools (i.e., oral counting, quantity discrimination, missing number, and numeral identification) and mathematics achievement criterion measures. We also identified moderating factors of the relationship between CBM and the criterion measures. Studies were included if they focused on at least one of the four common early numeracy CBM, and included correlations for students in …

Coding Protocol: A Meta-Analysis Of Mcomp And Mcap Curriculum-Based Measurement, Gena Nelson, Robin Codding May 2022

Coding Protocol: A Meta-Analysis Of Mcomp And Mcap Curriculum-Based Measurement, Gena Nelson, Robin Codding

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this document is to provide readers with the coding protocol that authors used to code 26 studies that met inclusion criteria for a meta-analysis. The focus of the meta-analysis was to determine the average correlations between MCOMP and MCAP curriculum-based measurement (CBM) and mathematics achievement criterion measures, as well as to determine the moderating factors of this relationship. Studies focused on grades 2 through 8 MCOMP, MCAP, and mathematics achievement. We coded 26 studies published between 2005 and 2021, including 15 peer-reviewed journal articles and 11 doctoral dissertations. Across studies, we coded variables such as basic study …

Math Basics Afterschool Club, Lexi Soukup, Meg Williams

Honors Expanded Learning Clubs

This is a compilation of Lexi Soukup and Meg Williams’ work as Club Leaders in an Afterschool Club run through the University of Nebraska- Lincoln and YMCA Afterschool Programs titled Math Basics. Our club is an interactive, hands-on math exploration where students are challenged to change their perspective of math, and it is meant to occur once weekly. During this club, we try to challenge their current views of math and expand their knowledge on math concepts they learn in class through activities and games. This is meant to make math FUN! Our compilation of lesson plans are sure to …

Exploration Of Piccirillo's Trick On Low Crossing Number Knots, Gabriel Adams Mar 2022

Exploration Of Piccirillo's Trick On Low Crossing Number Knots, Gabriel Adams

Honors Theses

Piccirillo recently discovered a process that can be applied to an unknotting number one knot to convert it into a different knot called a Piccirillo dual. Piccirillo duals have been shown to have the same n-trace and the same sliceness. However, exploration and knowledge of this process is limited. We were able to generate the Piccirillo duals for several low-crossing number knots. We offer the foundation for and explain how to follow the Piccirillo process and generate Piccirillo duals. This talk assumes little knowledge of knot theory and concisely gives newcomers a clear introduction to get started working with Piccirillo …

Curriculum-Based Measures In Mathematics: An Updated Review Of The Literature, Gena Nelson, Allyson J. Kiss Jan 2022

Curriculum-Based Measures In Mathematics: An Updated Review Of The Literature, Gena Nelson, Allyson J. Kiss

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this document is to provide readers with the coding protocol that authors used to code 96 studies that focused on Stages 1, 2, and/or 3 of curriculum-based measurement in mathematics (CBM-M) research. Stage 1 refers to evidence for using CBM at one point in time (i.e., static scores), such as for screening for difficulty. Stage 2 refers to evidence for using CBM repeatedly overtime, such as for progress monitoring. Stage 3 focuses on the instructional utility of CBM (i.e., instructional decisions to increase student achievement). The purpose of the systematic review was to update the Foegen et …

Cache Code Math Mathematics Lesson Plans: Geometry, Jody Clarke-Midura, Jessica Shumway, Kimberly Beck, Umar Shehzad, Mimi Recker Jan 2022

Cache Code Math Mathematics Lesson Plans: Geometry, Jody Clarke-Midura, Jessica Shumway, Kimberly Beck, Umar Shehzad, Mimi Recker

Instructional resources

This document is comprised of a set of six 5th grade mathematics lesson plans. The lessons are intended to be implemented in conjunction with the computer lab activities “Jump Using My Blocks and Variables,” “Guess the Triangle,” and “Guess the Quadrilateral.” Geometry concepts (classifying triangles and quadrilaterals) are paired with computer coding concepts of conditionals and variables.

Mathematical Connections Established In The Teaching Of Functions, Vesife Hatisaru Jan 2022

Mathematical Connections Established In The Teaching Of Functions, Vesife Hatisaru

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study explores the types of mathematical connections established in the classroom in the teaching of functions. An extended model for mathematical connections (different representations (DR), procedural (PC), if-then (I-T), part-whole connections (PWC), feature/property (F/P), analogies, and instruction-oriented connections (IOC)) is used as the analytical framework. The context for the study is classroom observations of two secondary mathematics teachers teaching functions to Grade 9 students. The strength of teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) the concept of function is different: one has stronger MKT, while the other has weaker MKT. A total of 485 connections are identified in a sample …
