Highlights include: This week the Spectrum gives us building updates on the new projects at SHU, as well as recaps of both Superbowl LII and the State of the Union Address. Two members of the Sacred Heart Community were awarded an Opioid Addiction Prevention Grant, three new Chaplains are introduced to Sacred Heart's campus, and the "Heart to Heart" mental health initiative gets students and athletes involved in finding their voices. The Theatre Arts Program presents Be More Chill, and Kate Svenson is named NEC Scholar Athlete of the year.

The K-12 schools in Paris and Bourbon County, Kentucky were segregated from the earliest schools developed after the U.S. Civil War up to the 1960s. This presentation was an overview of the development of the schools, the decrease in the student populations, and school integration in the Paris and Bourbon County schools. The presentation was an opportunity for all students, of all races, to share their memories and the memorabilia they had with them.

The date was Monday, August 8, 2016. The coeditor of this book, Gary Hentzi, and I visited Baruch College’s archives to get an idea of the kind of photographic resources we would have available to use as illustrations. We were impressed by how much material the archives contained and by how well organized they were. The director of the archives, Sandra Roff, and her staff walked us through the collection and occasionally showed us a particular picture that they thought could be of interest.

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This project-based learning unit incorporates knowledge from history, English, math and science courses. Students explore how geography and available resources, coupled with technological advancements, shape a civilization’s industry and therefore the quality of life of the inhabitants. Students design a product that could be made from the natural resources of their civilization and attempt to sell their product in a simulated market.

This portfolio traces the process of the design, teaching methods, and assessment tools I used in reconfiguring ETHN 201: Introduction to Native American Studies. “Introduction to Native American Studies” (INAS) is an introductory survey course taken either as an elective or as the foundation of a Native Studies minor. The class size is relatively small, capped at twenty-four students. Students who take this course come from a broad cross-section of disciplines in the College of Arts and Sciences and beyond, although perhaps the greatest portion comes from the Humanities. This chapter focuses on the design approach used in the self-reflexive finale of the mobile augmented reality history game Jewish Time Jump: New York. In the finale, the iOS device itself and the player using it are implicated in the historical moment and theme of the game. The author-designer-researcher drew from self-reflexive traditions in theater, cinema, and nonmobile games to craft the reveal of the connection between the mobile device and the history that the learners were studying.
