-Recognize that student-athletes face unique challenges in transitioning to lifetime physical activity beyond college athletics.

-Collaborate with university athletics departments to facilitate transition programs for student athletes in their final year to provide an opportunity for open discussion and goal setting for the future.

-Connect student-athletes with community resources during their transition out of college.

-Provide former student-athletes with opportunities to experience new forms of physical activity within supportive group settings.

Friends of Murray Library

Friends of Murray Library at Messiah College was formed in 1993 for the following purposes:

  • To stimulate interest in the collections and facilities of Murray Library.
  • To provide an opportunity for those interested in the library to participate in exhibits, programs, and volunteer activities.
  • To attract gifts of books, manuscripts, and other materials for the library's enrichment.
  • To encourage and receive financial contributions for needs beyond the library budget, such as building special collections.

One might argue that this is not a wise time to raise queries of the common good for Christian higher education. Our in-boxes and newsfeeds provide persistent reminders of the crises facing higher education today, many of which uniquely impact Christian colleges and universities. A crisis of the humanities, as students turn away from areas of study traditionally associated with the liberal arts. A crisis of cost, as independent colleges wrestle with an unsustainable financial model and an increasingly skeptical constituency. Research on recreational media use among youth indicates young people of color who spend more time with media may also be at higher risk for school disengagement and low personal contentment compared to their white peers. This puts these students in a position to be even more influenced by the themes and messages that abound in pop culture, particularly music and social media. Initiation Of Standardized Depression Screening In College Health: A Quality Improvement Project, Kristen Slabaugh, Shannon Harris, Samuel Wilcock

Background: Depression is a leading health concern in college health. An on-campus health clinic was identified as conducting complaint-based screening. U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends standardized screening in all primary care settings.

Objective: To implement a quality improvement project for standardized screening and referral of depressive symptoms and identify factors related to mentoring program interest in a college health clinic.

Methods: Demographic survey and Patient Health Questionnaire-2 were distributed to students who met inclusion criteria. Positive screens received further intervention with Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and immediate evaluation, encouragement of follow-up, or educational handout.
