Identifying Significant Components Of A Sexuality Education Program For Students With Severe Disabilities, Amanda Brennen Dec 2017

Identifying Significant Components Of A Sexuality Education Program For Students With Severe Disabilities, Amanda Brennen

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The body of knowledge in the field of sex education that has been modified for individuals with disabilities is currently lacking. There are currently no evidence based practices for sexuality education. The programs that currently exist are either not effective for the severe population or there is no research to support its use. However, people that are considered in the population of severe special education could benefit greatly from a sexuality program that is evidence based.

The researcher conducted a study to determine the topics that are common in the literature and that are important to teachers and their with …

Personal Reflections / 12.20.17, José M. Torres

Personal Reflections

As 2017 comes to a close, I want to wish you and your loved ones happy holidays and a very happy New Year. For those who celebrated Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, happy belated holidays to you!

For this personal reflection, I want to take time to amplify our very important IMSA faculty. I have enjoyed the many one-on-one conversations with individual faculty members this fall. While I have not yet finished meeting with each one, I’m at number 42, my appreciation, esteem, and respect continues to increase for each of them. I have learned first-hand of their tireless efforts in teaching, …

The New Tax Law’S Impact On Higher Ed, Aldemaro Romero Jr. Dec 2017

The New Tax Law’S Impact On Higher Ed, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

“The power to tax is the power to destroy,” said the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall. When one looks at the new tax code produced by the U.S. Congress, we can see how this quote rings a bell of authenticity when it comes to higher education.

Since the latest changes in the U.S. tax code were first proposed, it was clear that higher education was going to be one of the targets of Republicans in Congress. The overall objectives of these changes were to get the money needed to pay for huge tax cuts to benefit …

Preparing Today’S Middle School Science Students For The Real World Of Science Through Relevant And Inquiry-Based Activities, Hannah F. Walsh Dec 2017

Preparing Today’S Middle School Science Students For The Real World Of Science Through Relevant And Inquiry-Based Activities, Hannah F. Walsh

Honors Program Theses and Projects

During the past several decades we have seen an increase in the demand for individuals trained in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines (Rothwell, 2013). While this is this case, according to the Bureau of Labor, the United States will see a shortage of STEM workers over the next decade, with the demand for highly trained STEM workers exceeding the minimal supply (Rothwell, 2013). In a study of bachelor and associate students in the academic year of 2003 and 2004, only 28% of bachelor students and 20% of associate students entered STEM fields (Chen & Soldner, 2013). This study …

Relationship Between Physical Activity And Stress Among Junior High School Students In The Physical Education Environment, David C. Barney, Frank Pleban, Terrance Lewis

Faculty Publications

The study purpose was to explore grade level differences (7th, 8th, and 9th) among junior high school students’ perception of participation in physical education class on individual environmental stress. Physical activity’s role as a stress reduction tool has been well documented. However, physical activity as a stressful event in the school and physical education environment has been less established; particularly in junior high school students. Study participants were comprised of 872 junior high school students, 585 males (67%) and 287 females (33%), enrolled in four junior high schools. Stratified by grade, 315 7th …

A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopic Investigation Of Speech Production During Reading, Nick Wan, Allison S. Hancock, Todd K. Moon, Ronald B. Gillam

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study was designed to test the extent to which speaking processes related to articulation and voicing influence Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) measures of cortical hemodynamics and functional connectivity. Participants read passages in three conditions (oral reading, silent mouthing, and silent reading) while undergoing fNIRS imaging. Area under the curve (AUC) analyses of the oxygenated and deoxygenated hemodynamic response function concentration values were compared for each task across five regions of interest. There were significant region main effects for both oxy and deoxy AUC analyses, and a significant region x task interaction for deoxy AUC favoring the oral reading …
