Since 2010, the library at the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) in South County Dublin, Republic of Ireland, has been developing a suite of interactive online information literacy tutorials covering research, referencing, plagiarism and core academic skills. These open educational resources (OERs) provide users with a vibrant, challenging learning environment and facilitate flexible, 24/7, independent learning. The learning objects are accessible via multiple delivery platforms and are available for reuse under Creative Commons licence via national and international teaching and learning repositories.

At-Risky Business: Empowering And Engaging At-Risk Youth Using A Wiki For Academic Service Learning, Kathryn Johnson

This paper examines the lessons learned from implementing an academic service learning project using a wiki to foster mentoring opportunities for at-risk students from two educational institutions. Students on freshmen probation at a university mentored down to at-risk students at a high school about making the transition to university life and academics. In a reciprocal relationship, the at-risk high school students in a career preparation class “mentored up” to the university students about employability skills. The two groups interacted using a wiki. Students were empowered by mentoring and learned valuable digital writing and collaboration skills throughout this innovative project. This …

This session focuses on digital collections at the University of Dayton Libraries and how it has evolved from using a stand-alone digital asset management system (CONTENTdm) to a flexible, robust, open-access institutional repository solution hosted by Berkley Electronic Press (Bepress). We share our trials and errors from our first digitization initiatives that began in 2006, to the launch of our first digital collection using CONTENTdm in 2010, to the implementation of our IR, eCommons, in 2013. Parker Palmer speaks of the “privatization of teaching” as one of the factors that prevent faculty from growing “more fully into the demands of the teacher’s craft.” At the same time, new methodologies of teaching and learning are changing the landscape of higher education. Because of privatization, faculty and TA are often unaware of how learning works and continue to rely heavily on lecture. During this interactive session, participants will learn how an eight-week “course” known as the Teaching Academy transformed participants’ attitudes towards learning-centered teaching. The primary goal of the Peer Mentoring Guide is to develop fourth year medical students (MS-4s) into mentors for first year medical students (MS-1s). The purpose of this resource is to provide others who want to develop a peer mentoring program as part of an advanced students-as-teachers curriculum.

The George Washington University was one of the first schools to have a program to prepare medical students for their teaching role as residents and practicing physicians, which was called TALKS (Teaching and Learning Knowledge and Skills). From June 2010 until the present, a suite of online reusable learning objects (RLOs) has been created at the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) library covering a range of information literacy (IL) competencies. These RLOs have helped to facilitate student transition from second to third level, advance IL and enrich the student learning experience.
