Critical Transitions In Faculty Learning: Helping Faculty Become Learning-Centered Teachers, Judith Longfield
Critical Transitions In Faculty Learning: Helping Faculty Become Learning-Centered Teachers, Judith Longfield
Judith Longfield
New methodologies of teaching and learning are changing the landscape of higher education. However, faculty are often unaware of the research and continue to rely heavily on lecture. During this interactive session, participants will learn how an extended series, known as the Teaching Academy, transformed instructors’ ideas about effective teaching and their classroom practices. In addition to learning about the impact of the Academy, participants will also consider ways to overcome barriers and implement this type of in-depth faculty development, which did not require additional funding, on their campuses.

Using Perceptual Maps For Career And College Counseling, Oscar T. Mcknight, Kerri Carmichael, Gregory Pollock
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
Perceptual mapping is a modeling technique used in business to visually display relationships and perceptions of customers. In business, perceptual maps are often called product positioning maps. Conceptually, perceptual maps foster a better and deeper understanding of products and services in terms of public perception or actual outcomes. In short, marketers attempt to position products, product line, and brand or company type relative to their competition or competency. For counselors, this process facilitates open and honest discussion relative to personal expectations and goals. This presentation reviews how to interpret and use a Perceptual Map given a multiple variable (axis) system; …

Predicting Student Adaptation To College By Learning And Study Strategies, Katharine S. Adams
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
This study highlights the relationships between learning and study strategies with student adaptation to college. Postsecondary students (n = 146) completed a demographic questionnaire, the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI), and the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ). Students were trifurcated into low, average, and high achieving groups by GPA. Data was analyzed using multiple regression and correlational techniques. LASSI subscales significantly predicted adaptation to college as measured by the SACQ for average and high achieving students, but did not significantly predict adaptation to college for low achieving students. The unique contributions of the LASSI subtests varied in …

This new Student Affairs assessment model allows an institutional researcher to study student feedback minute to minute, day to day, week to week basis, etc. Discussed are the strengths and weaknesses of a Nielsen Audio model when applied to Student Affairs.
At-Risky Business: Empowering And Engaging At-Risk Youth Using A Wiki For Academic Service Learning, Kathryn Johnson
At-Risky Business: Empowering And Engaging At-Risk Youth Using A Wiki For Academic Service Learning, Kathryn Johnson
Conference Presentations
This paper examines the lessons learned from implementing an academic service learning project using a wiki to foster mentoring opportunities for at-risk students from two educational institutions. Students on freshmen probation at a university mentored down to at-risk students at a high school about making the transition to university life and academics. In a reciprocal relationship, the at-risk high school students in a career preparation class “mentored up” to the university students about employability skills. The two groups interacted using a wiki. Students were empowered by mentoring and learned valuable digital writing and collaboration skills throughout this innovative project. This …

Mothers play an integral role in language acquisition—we do refer to our native languages as “mother tongues,” after all. In South Korea, mothers play an especially important role, pushing Korea to be the largest education market in the world.
This paper examines how EFL teachers can integrate mothers in their students’ learning process using a family-oriented approach.
