E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

Effectively developing and deploying campus portals can dramatically increase productivity and profitability of research and education. The cutting edge of this initiative lies in aligning portals with students’ current needs. Our study aims at identifying these needs and provides a preliminary theoretical framework for portal developers to benchmark their objectives according to educational requirements. The study is mostly done based on local observations and experience of its conductors within higher education communities in Iran. The result of this primary study paves the way of implementing campus portals in the Iranian higher education communities which will be paced by the …

Cross-Disciplinary Prospecting: Educational Technology Offers Up Gold For Library And Information Science Curricula, Michael J. Miller

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

This article provides an overview of the current trends in information and communication technology affecting library services and recommends how, because of these trends, library and information science (LIS) curricula should turn an inquisitive, interdisciplinary eye toward the field of educational technology. Gaps in current LIS professional training and practice are cited, curriculum standards in LIS and educational technology programs are described and compared, and examples are presented to demonstrate how educational technology pedagogy and practice help to successfully augment library skills, service, and practice.

Review Of Academy Of Distinguished Teachers, Paul Savory

Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Reports

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln established the Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 1994. Academy members are to engage in activities to support teaching at UNL. Such activities may include (but were not limited to), speaking about teaching and pedagogy at department, college, campus, state, regional, and national meetings, allowing other faculty to observe one's teaching, and serving in an advisory capacity to the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on matters related to teaching at UNL. Following my selection into the UNL Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 2004, I explored ideas for how the structure of our campus …

Voices Of Women In The Field--Reflections From A Chair, Clarissa Craig Jul 2005

Voices Of Women In The Field--Reflections From A Chair, Clarissa Craig

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

I did not grow up wanting to be a woman administrator in a community college setting ... or a woman administrator anywhere for that matter. Until about the sixth grade when my height shot up to almost six feet, I was going to be an airline stewardess and jet set around the world. Liking science and math, my attentions then turned to being a doctor, specifically a pediatrician. How did I get here? It hasn't been a particularly circuitous path. Yet, it is one that does seem to have evolved rather than having been a conscious choice at some point. …

First Things First: Writing Strategies, Marilyn L. Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Finding a niche for your writing is essential. If you are writing for publication, then you want your manuscript to appear in print. Consider if the topic is "publishable." Some topical areas are saturated, so writing in these areas may be futile. If journal editors do not have space in a journal, or interest in a topic, the manuscript will not be published. It also would be wise to determine "which topics are hot" and "which topics are not."

Review Of The Middle Of Everywhere: Helping Refugees Enter The American Community By Mary Pipher., Patricia Hoffman Jul 2005

Review Of The Middle Of Everywhere: Helping Refugees Enter The American Community By Mary Pipher., Patricia Hoffman

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Pipher, author of The Middle of Everywhere: Helping ReJugees Enter the American Community, has written an intensively personal narrative exploring her own consciousness as well as giving an eye-opening treatise on the immigrant experience. Although some approached this conflict with a combative spirit, patriotic zeal, or a call for isolationism, Pipher chose a personal approach culled from her first hand experience with some of these newest immigrants. Pipher did not set out to do an ethnographic study. One emerged spontaneously as she became involved in the lives of refugees, migrant workers, and other recent immigrants.

You're Fired! Donald Trump, No Child Left Behind, And The Limits Of Dissonant Leadership In Education, Andrea Kayne Kaufman Jul 2005

You're Fired! Donald Trump, No Child Left Behind, And The Limits Of Dissonant Leadership In Education, Andrea Kayne Kaufman

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

In Part I of this article, I explain the theory of Primal Leadership and Dissonant Leadership (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, 2002). In Part II, I enunciate the ways in which key No Child Left Behind Act provisions encourage and, in some cases, mandate that schools utilize Dissonant Leadership strategies. In Part III, I explain why the Dissonant Leadership strategies espoused by the No Child Left Behind Act undermine the purported purposes of the statute. In Part IV, I consider the ability of an education statute to mandate or encourage Primal Leadership strategies.

Developing A Shared Vision: Strategic Planning As A Guide To Technology Funding

ACUTA: Other Publications

In December 2004 ACUTA and WTC sent a survey to 768 ACUTA primary members to determine what issues were important on campuses today and what issues respondents felt will be of importance in the next few years. Questions related to management, strategy, infrastructure, technology, organization, polity, and funding. One of the most interesting observations is that the current and five-year rankings are nearly identical- today's concerns are also your concerns for the future. Here are the highlights of our findings:

A cluster of five management issues were rated very close to the same importance. This cluster included developing a vision …

Stories Of Resiliency: Successful Female Educational Leaders, Anita M. Pankake, Danna Beaty

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

We examined the reported experiences of 12 successful female educational leaders as stories of resiliency development through overcoming or coming back from adversity. Specifically, the reported experiences of these women were examined to determine: When did adversity evidence itself in the lives of these leaders? Were any of the adversity experiences common among the women in terms of when they occurred and the contexts or settings in which they occurred? What strategies did these women use in overcoming or coming back from these adversity experiences? Do the reported experiences of these twelve successful female educational leaders align with the literature …

Women In History--Bella Stavisky Abzug (1920-1998), Margaret Blair

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Although not normally connected with educational issues, Bella Abzug was a passionate supporter of women's rights, and often education went hand-in-hand with improving the economic conditions in which women lived worldwide, and education was vital to women becoming more involved in the political process. From the time she defied Jewish tradition to learn to read the Torah, Bella Abzug fought for equality of women in education. She was student body president at Hunter College where she was active in political causes with other students. During this time she opposed the Rapp-Coudert committee, that was attempting to "crush public education" and …

Notes From The Great American Desert, Marilyn L. Grady, Barbara Y. Lacost Jul 2005

Notes From The Great American Desert, Marilyn L. Grady, Barbara Y. Lacost

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Invisibility may be one of the greatest challenges women face. One of the great flaws in the writing of U.S. history has been the omission of the role or presence of women from the written record-women are invisible. Fortunately, three women authors (i.e., Willa Cather (1873-1947), Bess Streeter Aldrich (1881-1954) and Mari Sandoz (1896-1966)) of Nebraska have chronicled settlement stories in their writings. They have preserved, through their writings, the presence, work, and contributions of women during the homesteading, pioneer, and early settlement years in Nebraska. Their efforts are a fine antidote to women's invisibility. May you also write so …

Women In Athletic Leadership, Sandra L. Moore, Suzanne L. Gilmour, Mary P. Kinsella

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Despite significant increased participation opportunities for girls and women in sports following the passage of Title IX, women remain underrepresented in secondary athletic leadership roles. Thirty-eight female and 158 male high school athletic directors responded to a 19-item Athletic Director Survey (ADS) designed to elicit information on the following: position attainment factors, attainment and retention barriers, perceptions of similar or different barriers for women and men, leadership and management skills, personal sacrifices, and strengthening female candidacy for athletic directorships. Results indicate· the importance of mentoring and networking in providing women with equal access to athletic leadership positions.

Alcohol Expectancies Among A Sample Of Thai High School Students, Ian Newman, Duane F. Shell, Saranya Innadda, Tiandong Li

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to identify and describe the alcohol-related expectancies of a sample of Thai high school students. A convenience sample of 2,227 high school students in Chon Buri province completed an alcohol expectancy questionnaire. The initial factor analysis was done with data from 875 questionnaires and identified four factors. The four factors were cross-validated on two separate sets of 676 questionnaires. A relationship was found between expectancies and drinking behaviors. High school students who drank alcohol had significantly greater positive expectancies for alcohol and greater expectancies that alcohol would enhance sexual performance and power. Students who …

Book Review: Liora Bresler (Ed.). (2004). Knowing Bodies, Moving Minds: Towards Embodied Teaching And Learning. , Margaret A. Macintyre Latta

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Each chapter foregrounds embodied significances for learners and learning. Contributing authors draw me into the text in different ways and with different purposes, but all with strong recursive waves rooted in themes of receptivity and relatedness. As I find myself experiencing these waves some are quiet reminders, some carry me away to new thinking, new ideas, and new experiences; some resonate deeply, while others awaken and enliven. Embodied understandings are elicited as I encounter myself within these waves. It is this self-encounter that makes the book so powerful. Gadamer's notion of foregrounding comes into play as concomitantly I engage the …

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Few empirical findings or technical guidelines are available on the current transition from analog to digital audio recording in childhood speech sound disorders. Of particular concern in the present context was whether a transition from analog- to digital-based transcription and coding of prosody and voice features might require re-standardizing a reference database for research in childhood speech sound disorders. Two research transcribers with different levels of experience glossed, transcribed, and prosody-voice coded conversational speech samples from eight children with mild to severe speech disorders of unknown origin. The samples were recorded, stored, and played back using representative analog and digital …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

According to the previous survey conducted by Florida Atlantic University Student Academic Affairs department in 2001, it was indicated that faculty uses of teaching and learning technologies/electronic instruction media to teach and deliver their lectures at the college were lacking.

With the current research study, investigations were thoroughly made and suggestions are provided on the improvement of faculty performance in the use of technologies at the institution to teach and convey knowledge to their students. In this report, the institutional personnel and its administration are made aware whether all existing technologies are being optimally used by faculty. This study also …

Design Bearings, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta May 2005

Design Bearings, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Discovery and invention yield design, bringing forth a tangible form. There is little room for exploring designing as being-in-the-world where rigid rules dictate the way in which design should be represented. Limitations unduly impinge upon or restrict the possibilities for designing. Design as being-in-the-world comes from playing with possibilities, starching for relationships. The development of such thinking in situation allows for the discovery of potential. It permits possibilities to be included as the search evolves. Without a playful spirit it would seem that imaginative thought, requiring speculation and conjecturing about possibilities, might not be possible. So as educators find themselves …

A Contextual Approach To The Assessment Of Social Skills: Identifying Meaningful Behaviors For Social Competence, Emily D. Warnes, Susan M. Sheridan, Jenenne Geske, William A. Warnes

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

An exploratory study was conducted which assessed behaviors that characterize social competence in the second and fifth grades. A contextual approach was used to gather information from second- and fifth-grade children and their parents and teachers regarding the behaviors they perceived to be important for getting along well with peers. Data were gathered from children through structured interviews with the researcher. Parents and teachers provided information through open-ended paper-pencil surveys. Qualitative methodology was used to analyze the data in this study. Specifically, a three-stage coding process derived from grounded theory was utilized (A. Strauss & J. Corbin, 1998). Triangulation, a …
