Foreign language acquisition is a subject of increasing importance in today’s world, acting as the backbone of international relations, trade and communication. In addition, through examination of a foreign culture and language, individuals can come to appreciate philosophies and values other than those pertaining to their own society. However, the difficulty and apparent uselessness of the subject material in the “here and now” dissuades many students from continuing language acquisition after obligatory general education requirements have been fulfilled. Through examining acquisition theories and factors which affect students’ motivation to continue second language acquisition; I developed a strategy in order to …

The field of medicine is under constant change and reconstruction, especially when it comes to healthcare practitioners. Within the past few decades there has been a shortage of people who are capable of fulfilling these needs. For this reason a new profession has been developed; it is called a Physician Assistant (PA). Professionals with this title have been through a rigorous training modeled after what a medical student goes through, but it is condensed into a much …

Roger Williams Park Edible Forest Garden, Mark S. Scialla
Senior Honors Projects
An edible forest garden is a low-maintenance system that uses edible native and regionally-adapted plants arranged in beneficial relationships to meet human, wildlife and ecosystem needs. The forest garden in Roger Williams Park will transform underutilized urban land into a highly productive parcel producing market-viable fruits, nuts, vegetables, medicine and fiber. Forest gardens mimic natural forest systems in architecture and complexity. The design follows ecological principles to create a system that promotes biodiversity and enhances the surrounding ecosystem. This project also demonstrates the potential to grow food and create land-based livelihoods in the city.

The University Of Rhode Island’S Response To Student Protest, Caitlin Blomquist
Academic History
This paper describes and analyzes a crisis at the University of Rhode Island. The university had a reputation as a very homophobic campus, and some students and staff felt that the administration was not doing enough to combat harassment and discrimination. For eight consecutive days in September 2010, ten students occupied a space in the campus library, demanding that the university enact specific measures to improve the campus climate for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender students. This paper presents how the crisis unfolded, details the university’s response, and offers a critique of the response.
