Broodmother: What The Lack Of Bathroom Breaks Reveals About Dehumanizing Teachers, Jonathan Michael Coker
Broodmother: What The Lack Of Bathroom Breaks Reveals About Dehumanizing Teachers, Jonathan Michael Coker
Educational Leadership
This chapter asks, “What is it like to be a public school teacher in a school that doesn't allow for adequate bathroom breaks?” Using van Manen's interpretive phenomenological methodology, the authors analyzed interviews from nine participants to create an empathetic portrayal of teachers who have inadequate bathroom breaks. These experiences were then distilled into a series of insights through the concept of “broodmothering.” These broodmothers deny their own physical and mental needs in the interest of supervising children, and show a profession burdened by increasing parentification and dehumanization of teachers. After connecting this phenomenon to larger issues in the profession, …
Engaging Students With High-Stakes Problems, Deepak Basyal
Engaging Students With High-Stakes Problems, Deepak Basyal
Mathematics and Statistics
Engaging students in meaningful mathematics problem-solving is the intention of many education stakeholders around the world. Research suggests that the implementation of high-stakes problems in mathematics teaching is one way to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding. Many carefully crafted open-ended problems constitute high-stakes problems, and proper use of such problems in teaching and learning not only encourages learners’ flexible thinking but also helps detect their misconceptions. However, what is less practiced and understood is: how exactly one should aim to implement such problems in a classroom setting. Teaching pre-service middle school teachers for a few years using high-stakes (mostly open-ended problems) …

Library Faculty Presentations
Have you considered incorporating a personal librarian program into your First Year Experience Program but are concerned about your small staff size, smaller institution or the process of collaboration between the library and FYE programs? Through the experiences of a staff of two librarians at Kankakee Community College, participants will leave the session with strategies for implementing a personal librarian program in partnership with a required FYE course. Learn how to retain students and reduce library anxiety through a program that values individual student connection over content and centers the library as a supportive space.

Library Faculty Presentations
Online tutorials have become a regular and important part of library instruction. During the pandemic there was an increase in the number of online tutorials created by libraries, as librarians shifted their approach to working with students. Having to adapt to the increasing changes in digital pedagogy left some librarians at a disadvantage. While some institutions had the resources to adapt quickly, other institutions did not. In order to understand the limitations of tutorial creation, one must understand the “pain points” or the difficulties some institutions and individuals go through in creating tutorials.

Diying Your Own Framework: Partnering With A Ctl To Construct Local Learning Outcomes, Jenn Shinaberger
Diying Your Own Framework: Partnering With A Ctl To Construct Local Learning Outcomes, Jenn Shinaberger
CeTEAL Staff Publications
The adoption of the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education by the Association of College & Research Libraries’ (ACRL) executive board in January 2016 motivated library instruction programs to deeply explore the Framework and carefully evaluate its impact on a local level. A coordinator of library instruction and the director of a Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) used Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) as a method to investigate designing learning outcomes for a library instruction program that incorporates the ACRL Framework. The authors trace the design process followed by Kimbel Library and the Center for Teaching Excellence …
Using Story To Reflect On Our Identities As Educational Developers, Jenn Shinaberger
Using Story To Reflect On Our Identities As Educational Developers, Jenn Shinaberger
CeTEAL Staff Publications
As educational developers, telling stories is central to our role as change agents. We tell our stories through personal contact, websites, social media, annual reports, assessment, consultations, teaching, research and many other artifacts. We use story and personal narrative to discuss events, keep traditions alive, relate information, share inspiration, persuade and many more reasons. Story is one of the most powerful ways to teach and engage. This poster session will challenge educational developers to consider and analyze how their core stories can be used to help give voice to our work, define our identity and position ourselves within our institutions.
