Aiswa Literacy Project B P-3 Assessment : Teachers Developing Effective Literacy Assessment Strategies, Judith Rivalland
Research outputs pre 2011
This project originated from recommendations from Phase 1 in the development of the National Literacy Plan for the Association of Independent Schools. These recommendations included the need for a systematic approach to literacy assessment and teaching. The current project aimed to address this situation. The primary purposes of the project were: to explore how teachers can best improve outcomes for children by understanding assessment measures more effectively; to provide time for reflection and discussion about what participating teachers find out from using the assessment procedures; to explore how this knowledge will help teachers select appropriate teaching for all children, particularly …

Research outputs pre 2011
The twelve chapters in this book-all but two written by researchers in Australian universities-provide ample evidence of the impressive contributions currently being made by Australia to research in mathematics education. The authors' fields of inquiry are diverse: they include discussion of the roles of language and imagery, problem posing and problem solving, students' beliefs and students' thinking, gambling and mental computation. T!1eir methodologies are no less diverse, incorporating descriptions of both quantitative and qualitative research projects, including action research in classrooms, theoretical perspectives and the development of theoretical models, reviews of research, surveys, clinical interviews and descriptions of new research …

The Future Of Headteachers As Educational Leaders In Pakistan: Implications For Pedagogical Leadership, Muhammad Memon
The Future Of Headteachers As Educational Leaders In Pakistan: Implications For Pedagogical Leadership, Muhammad Memon
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
Literature on educational management and leadership (e.g. Leithwood et al. 1994, Grace, 1995 and Segiovanni, 1998) suggests the significance of the role of headteachers as educational leaders in the western context. Whereas in the eastern context generally and particularly in Pakistan, the role of headteachers as educational leaders of the future is not yet fully understood and recognized. The current practice of headteachers in Pakistan seems to focus on supervision, monitoring and evaluation of teachers and students work, underpinning the style of 'bureaucratic / mechanistic leaders'. At present, headteachers spend most of their time on maintaining status quo through administration …

Retail/Wholesale Trade Employment Directly Related To Population Change In The Nonmetro Great Plains, Adamchak J. Donald, Bloomquist E. Leonard, Bausman Kent, Qureshi Rashida
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
During 1950-90, the nonmetro civilian labor force declined except during the 1970’s. In the 1970’s, nonmetro manufacturing increased substantially, and the baby boom generation entered the labor force. By contrast, the retail/wholesale labor force increased in every decade except for the 1980’s. Several factors could have contributed to the decline in the retail/wholesale labor force, including population decline and the effects of large retail establishments.

Historical Antecedents Shaping Concept Of Andragogy: A Comparison Of Sources And Roots, John Henschke
Historical Antecedents Shaping Concept Of Andragogy: A Comparison Of Sources And Roots, John Henschke
Adult Education Faculty Works
Although there is not one standard definition of the term "andragogy" in any one country or the numerous countries in which it has some recognition, andragogy is becoming a rallying term to identify theory, research and practice in the realm of adult education in some countries around the world, while finding resistance in others. Probing into and understanding some of the historical antecedents -- sources, roots and perceptions (or misperceptions) -- which have shaped and continue to shape varying conceptions of andragogy, may help to clarify and articulate a definition and direction for the further study of andragogy as an …

Pathways To Administrative Positions, Marilyn Grady, Bernita Krumm, Kaye Lynn Peery
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
Preparing for the job search, acquiring administrative skills, being part of a network, being in the "right place at the right time," and being the most qualified for a position are all pathways to administrative positions.
Throughout the United States, the majority of students enrolled in educational administration preparation programs are women. The struggle by women to gain leadership positions continues in the 1990s. A survey conducted by The Executive Educator and Xavier University shows that women are best represented among the ranks of elementary school principals (39.7%), followed by junior high/middle school principals (20.5%), and high school principals (12.1 …

In 1972 Title IX, the vaccine against gender inequity, was unveiled. Title IX is a federal law making sex discrimination in schools illegal. Under Title IX, sex bias is outlawed in school athletics, career counseling, medical services, financial aid, admission practices, and the treatment of students. In 1974, Congress passed the Women's Educational Equity Act to fund research, materials, and training to help schools eliminate gender bias. In 1978, Congress broadened the Civil Rights Act to include educational services to eliminate gender bias. Under the redesigned civil rights legislation, ten sex desegregation assistance centers were created to assist teachers, parents, …

Hispanic Women In Leadership: Opportunities, Barriers, And Strategies, Kaye Lynn Peery, Marilyn Grady
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
Research in leadership that focuses on gender and ethnicity issues provides us with little practical information for women, The few studies that do exist point to gender and race discrimination (Doughty, 1980; Marcias, ]994; Gorena, 1996), Researchers must move beyond the documentation of negative past and present conditions for women and minorities and begin to look at ways these individuals can achieve equality. Additional"cultural studies" will aid in the task of analyzing the power relations that occur in all social settings. If we can discover the source of women's support, we can increase this support for others. By examining the …

The workshop sponsored by the College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Committee on Friday January 16, 1998 was attended by approximately 40 faculty members and students from the College of Education. Dr. Gary Howard from the REACH Center (Respecting Ethnic And Cultural Heritage) located in Seattle, Washington provided an excellent three-hour workshop that asked attendees to ponder various dimensions of multicultural and global education. Dr. Howard provided information designed to facilitate the development of positive leadership skills for the implementation of cultural awareness and valuing diversity strategies in the classes in which the attendees teach---whether that be at a university …

College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Newsletter
As educators and future educators, we will be working with students from diverse groups and all walks of life. Many of us enter this field entrenched in our own culture with no real understanding of how others' life experiences have influenced their values and beliefs. The multicultural courses in the College of Education force us to examine how we came to adopt our values and from where our beliefs originated. No other course in the graduate curriculum forces us to challenge the myths and stereotypes of American society as profoundly as these courses.

I am proud to introduce the seventh annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. It provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
This paper describes a study that took place within the context of the Science: Parents, Activities, and Literature (Science PALs) project. Particularly, the study sought to determine answers to the following questions: (1) What are the internal consistencies and substantive, external, and structural validities of students' perceptions, teachers' self-reports, evaluations of videotaped classroom science teaching, and expert ratings? and (2) Can students' perceptions and attitudes and teachers' self-reports be used as acceptable surrogate measures for videotaped interactive constructivist science teaching? Findings suggest that instruments based on social constructivism do not completely and accurately document science teaching based on interactive-constructivist assumptions.

As we close in on the 21st century, educators all over the nation are racing to meet the challenge to develop "technological literacy" in their students, students who are able to use computers and other technology to improve their learning and performance.
