Signature Work and the Core Curriculum - Thursday 9/10 4:30-5:30pm in the Wilson Center
What is the goal of a Liberal Arts education? The college's Mission is to prepare students for meaningful lives of service and leadership in a diverse and changing world, and the notion of "Vocation" asks students to seek the intersection of their skills, their interests, and the needs of their communities during and after college. On the national stage, the AAC&U is advocating for ALL students to have access to "Signature Work", in which they pose and explore problems important to themselves and the world. …

Gendered Pronouns in the Classroom- Monday 8/24 4-5pm in Gävle Room 1
Last spring, the college community asserted that it will be inclusive of people of all genders. Since this affirmation, members of the campus community have requested professional development about the basic ideas in this discussion ("What is the difference between sex and gender?") as well as techniques for being inclusive ("How can I avoid misgendering a student or respond when others do?"). In this session, we will share foundational vocabulary, develop strategies for inclusion around gendered pronouns, and hold a Q&A with a couple of students about …

Behavioral Contracting For K-12 Students, Emily Blythe, Amanda Dennison
Applied Behavior Analysis (SPED 432) and Intervention Strategies for Literacy (SPED 431)
This poster provides examples to implement behavior contracting strategies in K-12 classrooms. These behavior contracting strategies will facilitate improved student behavior. Behavioral contracting refers to a written contract that describes a child’s behavioral obligations. In addition, reinforcers (teachers’ or parents’ obligations) are outlined for when the child has met the contract’s conditions. In research conducted by Cutrell (2010) middle-school students with emotional behavior disorders (EBD) were examined. The research demonstrated that behavioral contracts decreased the participants’ targeted, inappropriate behavior. The following details are outlined: For whom and why behavioral contracts are used; how to implement behavioral contracting in the classroom; …

Today’s first year college students arrive on campus underprepared for the academic demands that await them. Despite the dedicated efforts of high school librarians, research continues to illustrate that students lack basic information literacy skills crucial to their academic success in higher education. In this session high school and academic librarians will explore this issue with participants to identify key deficits in students’ 21st Century Skills.
The presenters will share their insights on college professors’ expectations and offer best practices for educating tomorrow’s college students. Presenters will provide ideas for lesson plans and assessment; actual college assignments will be shared.

Teacher Professional Development Models: Inquiry Into Concurrent Versus Separate Technology And Pedagogical Knowledge And Use, Brooke Robertshaw, Jeffery Olsen, Andrew Walker
The Instructional Architect Research Group
Examining two iterations of a teacher professional development workshop series, a qualitative inquiry into the extent to which teacher espoused knowledge and in-use teacher knowledge was affected by teaching technology skills concurrently and separately with the problem-based learning model was examined. Using data collected from pre-post surveys and journals, a stratified purposeful selection of three participants from both workshop iterations were selected based on overall PBL and self-reported technology knowledge scores.
