The UMaine Orchestra and its director, Prof. Anatole Wieck, will be hosting violinist Ryu Goto at their fall concert on Oct. 29th,2011 Ryu will be performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the ensemble on this concert along with other orchestra repertoire. This particular violinist is becoming a major concert artist on the international level, and the opportunity to have him here at UMaine comes through connections that our string faculty members have made through teaching at various summer festivals. His major talk, presented at 7PM on Monday, March 14 in the Arthur St. John Hill auditorium is entitled, " Mingling Art with Science. While individual youth might pursue his/her family's cultural history, oftentimes public cultural heritage work is the realm of older Franco Americans. This conference will provide a public space bring young people together to explore what it means to be Franco American today.

Professor Ian Lustick will present a lecture entitled, "Time, Israel, and the Demise of Developed States: The 'Solutions' that History Provides" on 14 April at 7:30 in 100 Neville Hall as part of the Schonberger Peace and Social Justice Memorial Lecture Series. Professor Lustick will also deliver a luncheon talk for the Socialist and Marxist Studies Series on 14 April at 12:30 in the Bangor Lounge in the Memorial Union on "American Foreign Policy and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict." Both talks will discuss important issues concerning the volatile Middle East and US foreign policy.

Buried Child by Sam Shepard was first presented in 1978, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. With this drama, Shepard made a name as one of America's premiere playwrights. Buried Child depicts the "fragmentation of the American nuclear family in a context of disappointment and disillusionment with American mythology and the American dream, the 1970s rural economic slowdown and the breakdown of traditional family structures and values." The amount we request, $5,000, is less than one-half of the projected operating budget for the fall Series of $13,338. The majority of the financial support for the Series will be provided by the English Department through its Elliott and Ellis Funds. The 2011 Festival will be held at the Collins Center for the Arts on February 19th and will feature matinee and evening performances. We intend to involve as many relevant campus groups and departments as possible to make this a true campus wide collaboration. As in past years this event will be free so that people of Maine have access to the cultural vitality of the University of Maine. In past years people have come from as far away as Presque Isle and Portland to enjoy this event.
