Executive Summary: In response to both internal and national findings and concerns, the first Western Washington University Lifestyles Project Survey of alcohol and drug usage among Western students was conducted in 1992 as part of the University's on-going effort (a) to investigate students' college experience both in and out of the classroom; (b) to enhance those experiences which lead to personal and academic success; and (c) to reduce risk factors jeopardizing student success. Introduction Students' ability to complete degrees in a timely manner has become one of the key new issues in higher education. Enrollment increases along with resource cuts have created increasing problems for student progress, which Western has been confronting through curricular changes, enrollment management policy changes, and higher workload for faculty and staff. At the same time, increases in tuition have highlighted students' felt need for efficient progress. Two recent findings illustrate the impact of these pressures on the university. The decision retains its career and life planning implications, and there is some evidence that this is a time of relative indecision in this regard. Executive Summary: Information for this report was obtained from the Student Tracking System. Findings are intended to provide insight into various characteristics of the 2100 graduates who matriculated during the 1993-94 academic year. Generally, Western's 1994 graduates were mostly female (57.8% versus 42.2% male); mostly transfers (53.5% versus 42.1% natives, or students who began at Western as first-time fresh); and overwhelmingly current Washington residents (97.5%). Some 1994 graduates chose not to disclose their ethnicity (5.4%). Of the rest, the majority were Euro-Americans (85.4%). Ethnic-minorities made up 8.4% of 1994 graduates, up from 7.0% in 1993. Executive Summary: Information for this report was obtained from a study conducted to determine the relative level of adjustment to college of first-generation and second-generation freshmen at Western Washington University. The study utilized the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ), a 67 item self-report adjustment measure. The SACQ is composed of a full-scale and four subscales: academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and attachment to the school the student is attending. The SACQ was administered to a randomly selected sample of 250 first and second- generation freshman students. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Between Summer, 1992 and Spring, 1993, 403 Masters degrees were awarded at Western. The first survey of Masters recipients by the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing, conducted in Spring, 1994, contacted 290 (72.9%) of them. The majority of Western's Masters recipients (58.6%) are women. One in six (18.1%) are not U.S. citizens; fewer (5.8%) are U.S. minority group members. Ages are diverse. The oldest was 63 at graduation; the youngest, 23. One-fourth (28.9%) were over 40. Over half (57.1%) received their undergraduate training in Washington, 28.9% at Western. The report presents findings intended to provide insight into various characteristics of the 2198 graduates who matriculated during the 1992-93 academic year (Fall 1992 through Summer 1993), 58.7% of whom were females and 41.3% males. Natives (students who began their education at Western as first-time frosh) made up 44.2% of the 1993 graduates, and transfers 54.3%. Executive Summary: This report presents the results of analyses of the relationships between a student's admission status, his or her grade point average and a variety of student characteristics, including gender, ethnicity, and age. The records for a sample of 982 Western Washington University upper-division students were provided by the University's Registrar for analysis. Upper-division undergraduates, defined as those having between 80 and 100 WWU credits, had an average GPA of 2.91. Students who began their higher education at Western (natives) were found to have a higher average GPA (2.96) than students who transfered from a two-year institution (2.85). These …

Executive Summary: In early September 1990, Hugh Walkup, the HEC Board's Associate Director for Institutional Research & Policy, asked all participants in the Assessment Task Force to respond to an outline of questions titled: "Statewide Indicators by Activity Category". This report is a summary of that information. The current list of statewide system-level indicators initially were developed by the assessment coordinators and the HEC Board staff. Executive Summary: This report contains an analysis of two different sets of data: one obtained from the Registrar's student information data base, the other from the Office of Assessment and Testing's data base. From the Registrar's student information data base, the report finds that Western graduated 991 students in June of 1990. A majority were women (56%) and transfer students (56.2%); most were Caucasians (83%) and in-state residents (95%).
