As part of the ongoing department initiative, The LIttlefield Gallery Visiting Artist Series, Maine sculptor Kazumi Hoshino will be our visiting artist-in-residence, May 1-5, 2017. Hoshino will provide daily demonstrations and art talks in and around the sculpture studio, free and open to the public and campus community. Hoshino will be working with various carving techniques in stone using both Japanese and American techniques and will create multiple stones that work together as a visually integrated single sculpture. The finished piece will later be installed in the lobby of the New Balance Recreation Center. The sculpture will also be scanned …

Those selected will be featured at the live performance at the Collins Center. The program is recorded and later re-broadcast on public radio stations nationwide, including MPBN.

Jean Byers Sampson was a 1944 graduate of Smith College. Early in her post-Smith career, she conducted and wrote the 1947, “A Study of the Negro in Military Service,” which contributed to President Harry Truman’s decision to desegregate the armed forces. Sampson moved to Maine in the early 1950s with her husband, Richard Sampson, a Bates College mathematics professor, and she played a unique and critical role in the state until her death in 1996. Bertha Rice Fitts was born in 1870, in Waterford, Maine. After graduating from Gorham Normal School in 1894, she became Master’s Assistant and eighth-grade teacher in Westbrook, Maine, before accepting a similar position at a grammar school in Quincy, MA. While in Quincy, she boarded with Mrs. Calvin Fitts, and in 1899 married her son, Arthur Fitts. She was involved in the Southern Branch of the Gorham Alumni Association for many years. Kenneth T. H. Brooks received his undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire and Masters and Doctoral degrees from Boston University. He served as President of Gorham State Teacher’s College from 1960-68, then continued as President of the University of Maine at Gorham from 1968-1970. He stepped down when Gorham merged with the University of Maine at Portland. He wrote See the Green and White Advancing: A History of Gorham Normal School, Teachers College, and State College 1878-1970, which was published in 1995. Kenneth Brooks died December 4, 1995. The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Dam is a water resources project proposed by the Federal Government (U. S. Army Corps of Engineers). Therefore, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the Corps of Engineers is required to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) on the project. A federal plan or project such as Dickey-Lincoln should take into account its effect upon man's health, safety, welfare and economic well-being, as well as effects upon the surrounding environment. More importantly, project plans should be evaluated in a "manner calculated to encourage harmony between man and his environment." In other words, project plans or …

This study is to assess the effects or impacts of construction and operation of the Dickey-Lincoln hydroelectric project upon the people in the St. John Valley, Maine, and New England. Having determined the effects of the project, a second objective is to discuss mitigation of defined adverse impacts. More specifically, this study attempts to identify adverse impacts and deal with how to minimize such impacts if at all possible.
