The purpose of this seminar is to acquaint participants with the ever-changing characteristics, often conflicting issues of causation, and various proposed solutions to the myriad of problems associated with gangs in schools. Special attention is given to the evolving nature of gangs in K-12 educational institutions (e.g., new types of juvenile groups developing and their associated behavior). Traditional subjects such as gang recruitment, initiation, and criminal activity are examined by discussing the many ways they manifest themselves in the school setting. A panel representing both secondary and higher education discussed the process utilized in Central Ohio through the HS-IHE Alignment Grant to align high school and college curricula and the agreed upon strategies to promote alignment. Discussion included both the alignment of course content and the alignment of the soft skills needed for college and career success. In 2008, the non-profit college access organization, A Call to College, researched the feasibility of extending their services to elementary and middle school students in their partner district, Newark City Schools. This investigation led to a phased, 4-year process to build the PEAK (Providing Early Awareness and Knowledge) Program. PEAK currently provides activity-based programming and specially designed lesson plans for every 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th grader in the district - over 2000 students from 82 classrooms in 11 different buildings.
