Catalyzing Transformation: Conditions In Extension Educational Environments That Promote Change, Nancy K. Fran, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Chris Smith, Brian Peters Jul 2009

Catalyzing Transformation: Conditions In Extension Educational Environments That Promote Change, Nancy K. Fran, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Chris Smith, Brian Peters

Barry A Garst

Extension faculty and administrators have suggested Cooperative Extension's goal and niche is transformative education—to bring about deep change in individuals, families, and communities. However even though transformative learning appears to be a desirable approach to Extension education, few scholars and practitioners have examined the conditions in Extension learning environments that promote transformation. In fact, Extension agents and faculty ask what they can do to increase the likelihood their work will result in transformation. The research reported here explored conditions that catalyze transformation in two Extension educational contexts: 1) Cornell Cooperative Extension agent/specialist work teams and 2) Virginia 4-H Camps.

The Mirror Effect, The Law Of Attraction, And "Points Of Attraction" That Can Nurture The Evolution Of Human Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson Jul 2009

The Mirror Effect, The Law Of Attraction, And "Points Of Attraction" That Can Nurture The Evolution Of Human Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

This message has several purposes. First, I want to express my immense joy that Chip Baggett and I are serving as Co-Presidents of AHP since August 16, 2009. In my view, Chip and I are long-time friends, who have a transcendent connection and synergistic energies. My desire and intent is for our co-presidency to mirror the effect(s) of synergistic collaboration as a “point of attraction” that can assist in the evolution of human consciousness across often “perceived personal and societal boundaries” (e.g., race, culture, ethnicity, class, individual and collective belief systems, and dogma). More generally, however, this message is intended …

John D. Foubert

The curriculum for the SHAPE program at the United States Naval Academy was written and in accordance with the contractual terms made with and will be copyrighted by three independent consultants hired by the United States Naval Academy: Gail Stern, Christopher Kilmartin, and John Foubert. We will discuss philosophical issues undergirding the choices we made in writing the program sessions and in conducting the training for peer educators. By providing …

Ronald K. Hambleton

Introduction - The objectives of this study were to develop a functional outcome instrument for hip and knee osteoarthritis research (OA-FUNCTION-CAT) using item response theory (IRT) and computer adaptive test (CAT) methods and to assess its psychometric performance compared to the current standard in the field. Methods - We conducted an extensive literature review, focus groups, and cognitive testing to guide the construction of an item bank consisting of 125 functional activities commonly affected by hip and knee osteoarthritis. We recruited a convenience sample of 328 adults with confirmed hip and/or knee osteoarthritis. Subjects reported their degree of functional difficulty …

«Remath - Representing Mathematics With Digital Media»: Deliverable 18: Integrated Theoretical Framework Version C, Christos Markopoulos Jul 2009

«Remath - Representing Mathematics With Digital Media»: Deliverable 18: Integrated Theoretical Framework Version C, Christos Markopoulos

Christos Markopoulos

At the origin of ReMath lies the contrast between the huge efforts performed in most European countries to improve mathematics education through the development and use of Digital Dynamic Artefacts and the limited impact of these efforts on the reality of school practices. The hypothesis made by the ReMath partners is that the fragmented character of the theoretical frames developed to approach learning and teaching processes in such environments on the one hand and the insufficient attention that research in that area tends to pay to contextual issues on the other one, play an important role in the permanence of …

Supply, Demand And Approaches To Employment By People With Postgraduate Research Qualifications In Science And Mathematics: Final Report, Daniel Edwards, T Smith

Dr Daniel Edwards

This is the final report bringing together knowledge and understanding of issues relating to the supply, demand and employment outcomes for people with higher degree research (HDR) qualifications in science and mathematics. The report highlights a number of key findings from the overall project. They are: * Australia has a growing supply of people with HDR science and mathematics qualifications. However, university completions in the science and mathematics fields is below that in non-scientific disciplines. * Consultations and case studies suggest that the demand for HDR qualifications in science and mathematics fields is low within private industry. * There is …

Supply, Demand And Approaches To Employment By People With Postgraduate Research Qualifications In Science And Mathematics: Case Studies, Daniel Edwards, T Smith

Dr Daniel Edwards

This is the third report of a research project which examines the supply and demand of people with postgraduate research qualifications in science and mathematics. In the report, four organisations showcase examples of good employment practices which cover issues associated with recruitment, retention, staff development and career paths. The report was completed in November 2008. To gain an overall perspective of the factors influencing supply and demand for this group it is important to consider all the reports in this project.

Increasing Competition For University And The Challenge Of Access For Government School Students--Case Study, Daniel Edwards Jul 2009

Increasing Competition For University And The Challenge Of Access For Government School Students--Case Study, Daniel Edwards

Dr Daniel Edwards

There is a wide variety of universities, university campuses and university courses in Australia available to those interested in pursuing a higher edu- cation degree. This paper examines the impact of increasing competition for entrance to university on the educational outcomes for students from the govern- ment school sector. Using Melbourne as a case study, the research shows that, over a four-year period of increased competition, entry to some of the more aca- demically accessible university campuses in the city became more difficult and this disproportionately affected the opportunities for university entrance among some groups. Despite the fact that there …

Supply, Demand And Approaches To Employment By People With Postgraduate Research Qualifications In Science And Mathematics: Literature Review And Data Analysis, Daniel Edwards, T Fred Smith

Dr Daniel Edwards

This report is the first in a project that investigates the demand for and supply of people with science and mathematics postgraduate qualifications in Australia. This report is divided into two main parts: a literature review and a data analysis. The report uses numerous national data sets to present a picture of the supply, demand and employment dynamics of postgraduates in the natural and physical sciences in Australia. The figures indicate an increasing number of postgraduates are completing studies in these fields. However, compared with other fields of education, supply in the natural and physical sciences is increasing at a …
